Hola a todo el mundo,

Los conciertos de Junio, parece que fueron hace siglos, verdad? En fin, me alegro que aquellos que fuisteis al Hammersmith o a Wembley, o vieron el concierto de Mandela en la televisión, lo disfrutaseis, y gracias por todas las cartas –parece ser que sólo tuvisteis una queja –que los conciertos fueron muy cortos! Ya le he pasado a Mark todas vuestras cartas sobre los conciertos para que pudiese tener una idea de lo que dice la audiencia. Fue genial conocer a algunos de vosotros en el Hammersmith y me alegro que aquellos que esperaron después del concierto consiguieseis conocer a algunos miembros de la banda y que os firmasen un autógrafo y os hicieseis fotos, etc.
Desafortunadamente tuvimos un problema con reventas que estaban pidiendo unas sumas de dinero ridículas para los tickets del Hammersmith. Bastante gente llamó a la oficina la semana antes de los conciertos diciendo que habían estado haciendo cola en la puerta del Odeon para comprar las entradas que ellos vendían, pero que fue imposible de conseguir porque había mucha gente comprando muchas entradas para revender después y que estaban delante de ellos. La mayoría de estas personas que llamaron se apuntaron al Info. Service en el momento para así poder conseguir las entradas de nosotros. También anuncios como el que os indico abajo empezaron a aparecer en los periódicos antes de los conciertos, con lo que parece ser que bastante gente decidió sacar algunos beneficios con esto y perderse el concierto… De cualquier modo, tuvimos bastantes policías fuera del Odeon, y además nos guardamos algunas entradas para venderlas en la puerta cada noche, con lo que el problema no fue tan malo como podría haber sido.

Las camisetas especiales resultaron ser tan populares que se vendieron todas en los dos días (incluidas las de exposición!) pero hemos hecho unas cuantas más extras para aquellos que llegaron tarde, o que no pudieron ir a los conciertos. Hay un formulario para pedirlas en esta carta. Espero que os gustasen las camisetas a pesar de ser tan grades, ya que eran todas talla única –gigantes! Todos los beneficios de las venta de estas camisetas, también irán a varias beneficencias que recibirán el dinero del concierto de Nelson Mandela como, el Movimiento Anti-Apartheid, Oxfam, Christian Aid, War on Want, Salvar a los Niños, La Fundación Católica para el Desarrollo Exterior, La Defensa Internacional y Fundación del Sida, y la Fundación del Obispo Ambrose Reeves.

También más tarde en esta carta hay un formulario para pedri un set de fotos en color de la banda, que se hicieron en el Hammersmith Odeon (un total de 20 fotos). Algunas de ellas fueron hechas por el fotógrafo Edward Poore, y otras por Douglas Forrest (el artista que ya participó en una de las cartas del año pasado). Inevitablemente, Mark, John y Eric Clapton salen en casi todas las fotos ya que es mucho más difícil hacer fotos de los otros chicos, pero el set contiene algunas de Alan, Guy y Chris. Desafortunadamente, Terry no sale en ninguna ya que siempre está escondido detrás de su batería. Si queréis pedir uno de estos sets, POR FAVOR, intentad hacerlo antes del 23 de Septiembre, así tendré una idea de cuantos sets necesito que se impriman –es mucho más fácil para mi si puedo pedirlas todas de una vez!

Bien, ahora seguimos con las noticias. Para cuando leáis esto Guy ya estará casado! El y Lauri-Ann se casaron el 13 de Agosto en una villa pequeñita de Devon, donde viven los padres de Guy. Los dos esperaban que no hubiese publicidad al respecto antes de la boda, con lo que se guardó el secreto muy bien. De todos modos, de alguna forma, el periódico local se enteró y la semana antes ocuparon una página principal entera donde decían que Lauri-Ann se llamaba Lois y la describían como una actriz americana! También se dijo que el evento sería “una galaxia de estrellas del rock y del pop”, más “otros miembros de los Dire Straits incluidos Mark Knopfler y Hal Lindes”. Mark si que fue a la boda y también Alan (que fue el padrino) pero la prensa y los curiosos que aparecieron ese día esperando ver un montón de famosos, quedarían bastante decepcionados, ya que nadie más estuvo allí! Con suerte el día no se convirtió en un circo –fue tranquilo, principalmente familiar –tal y como Guy y Lauri-Ann querían.

Jack, mientras tanto, se está acostumbrando a ser papa. Como ya escuchasteis a Mark anunciarlo en el concierto de Mandela, Jack y su mujer María ahora tienen dos niñas gemelas, nacidas justo antes de los conciertos (1 de Junio). Se llaman Caitlin y Nadine y están bien. La familia Sonni se acaba de mudar de Los Ángeles a Santa Barbara, y Jack está trabajando para una compañía de guitarras, haciendo investigaciones sobre nuevos amplificadores, etc.

John también está a punto de ser papá, por segunda vez. Su pareja Tracey está a punto de dar a luz en las próximas semanas (por lo que sabemos es UN bebé –nada de gemelos…)

Ahora la pregunta que se me hace constantemente: cuando va la banda a hacer más conciertos? Sé que Mark mencionó que durante el verano era posible que hiciesen algo –lo dijo en el escenario en el Hammersmith una de las noches. De cualquier modo, fue la emoción del momento y hasta ahora ha sido imposible para ellos hacer ningún concierto.
Además de otras cosas, Alan está en Hawai de vacaciones, Terry ha estado en USA de gira con Paul Carrack (telonero de Belina Carlisle), y John ha estado por todos los sitios haciendo su promoción para su album “Glass”. Mark ha tocado un par de veces en Londres, una vez en la Academia de Brixton con un grupo llamado The Bhundu Boys, y otra vez en The Mean Fiddler con Brendan Crocker –ambos fueron actuaciones en el último minuto.

Alan, Terry y John ya están de vuelta en el Reino Unido, pero en un par de días, Mark y Alan volarán a Dallas para empezar los ensayos con la banda de Eric Clapton. Los dos van a estar en este grupo para la gira en USA y para aquellos que estéis allí y queráis ir a alguno de los conciertos, aquí están las fechas:

Terry Williams también se va para los Estados Unidos unos días más tarde que Alan y Mark. El va a trabajar en el siguiente disco de Dave Edmunds en Nueva York desde el 24 de Agosto hasta el 6 de Septiembre, y entonces tiene un album con Dion (también en Nueva York) hasta mitad de Octubre.

Bueno, como podéis ver, no pueden haber conciertos de Dire Straits en un futuro próximo. Lo siento! Desearía tener más noticias para vosotros, pero esto es lo que hay –no hay nada que pueda hacer al respecto… parece que ninguno de los chicos tiene nada hasta finales de año, con lo que tendremos que ver que pasa entonces.

Sobre el 25 de Octubre, una recopilación de Dire Straits se pondrá a la venta en todo el mundo (el título: Money for Nothing). Este disco tendrá las siguientes canciones: “Sultans of Swing”, “Down to the Waterline”, “Portobello Belle” (en directo de Paris 1983), “Twisting by the pool”, “Romeo & Juliet”, “Where do you think you are going”, “Walk of life”, “Private Investigations”, “Money for Nothing”, “Tunnel of love” y “Brothers in Arms”. “Telegraph Road” estará en la version de cassette y cd, pero no la version del LP ya que no hay sitio suficiente.

Muchos de vosotros por supuesto tendréis ya todas esas canciones menos la versión en directo de “Portobello Belle” y quizás “Twisting by the Pool”, pero la compañía de discos, según el contrato con la banda, puede sacar un LP de grandes éxitos grabado durante el periodo de su contrato, y ahora es el momento que ellos han elegido, presumiblemente porque en estos momentos no hay otro producto de Dire Straits con el que chocar.

Ahora alguna de vuestras preguntas:

Fue editado el disco de Ben E. King donde trabajó Mark Knopfler? Si, se llama “Save the last dance for me” (EMI-Manhattan/ Capito). Mark y Guy están en un par de canciones incluido el título del album, y otros músicos que también colaboraron como John Paul Jones, Jimmy Helms y Ruby Turner.

Dónde puedo conseguir información sobre David Knopfler? Trish Hillis, la cual está en el D.S.I.S., acaba de empezar a llever O.D.K.I.S. (Servicio de Información oficial de David Knopfler) con la aprobación de David. Puedo todavía pedir fotos de la banda de Douglas Forrest (como salió en una de las cartas de 1987)? Si, aunque, sé que Doug tiene trabajo a jornada completa ahora, con lo que está muy ocupado. Compitió Mark en la carrera en Silverstone este año? No, pero Guy si (su primera carrera!) y fue el segundo en la carrera de celebridades.

Va a haber un calendario de Dire Straits de 1989? Nosotros no hemos hecho ninguno, y aunque va a salir uno que no es official (igual que en 1988) no lo vamos a vender aquí esta vez, principalmente porque no nos gustan las fotos… De todos modos, si queréis uno, lo publica Cultureshock en Londres, y se venderán en varias tiendas importantes en el Reino Unido a finales de año.

Tiene las preguntas en casa, pero las últimas semanas ha estado prácticamente todos los días remezclando en Air Studios para el album de grandes éxitos. Además, ha posado para Madame Tussauds (museo de cera), que están trabajando en una imagen de cera que se expondrá en una exposición de rock´n roll el próximo verano en el London Pavillion en Picadilly Circus (os contaré más cositas sobre esto conforme se vaya acercando el momento), y antes, el estuvo trabajando con el reciente album de Joan Armatrading “The shouting Stage” (A&M), con lo que… me temo que tendréis que esperar…

La primera noche llevaba unos vaqueros oscuros y una camiseta, y la segunda noche llevaba una minifalda negra y un top verde palabra de honor, si eso os da alguna pista. Para aquellos que sí me reconocieron, y me preguntaron quien era la chica rubia que estaba conmigo (la mayoría de los CHICOS me preguntaron, por supuesto!!) –era Anna-Brit, y ya podéis olvidar cualquier idea que tengáis porque vive con Pat Cash!

PPS- si por casualidad veis un coche Mini Special negro, con matrículoa EAD 170 Y con ventanas oscuras y con ventana en el techo, por favor, hacédmelo saber –es mi coche que me lo han robado…

The June shows seem a long time ago now, don´t they? Anyway, i´m glad those of you who went to Hammersmith or Wembley, or watched the Mandela show on TV, enjoyed it, and thanks for all your letters –seems like you only had one complaint –that the shows were too short! All of your letters about the concerts were passed on to Mark so he could get some audience feedback. It was nice for me to meet so many of you at Hammersmith and I´m glad those of you who waited around afterwards managed to meet various band members and get autographs, photos, etc.
Unfortunately we did have a problem with touts asking ridiculous sums of money for Hammersmith tickets. Quite a number of people phoned the office the week before the shows to say the had queued up for hours to buy some of the few tickets the Odeon were selling direct, but had been unable to get any because there were so many touts in the queue ahead of them. Most of them joined the Info. Service on the spot so they could get tickets from us! Also, advertisements like the one on the right started appearing in the papers before the show, so I think a few people decided to make a quick profit, and miss the show… Anyway, we did have a number of plain clothes police outside the Odeon, plus we held back a few tickets each night for sale on the door, so the problem wasn´t as bad as it might have been.

The special t-shirts proved so popular they completely sold out on the second night (including even the display ones!) but we have had some extra ones made up for those of you who were too late, or couldn´t attend the shows. There´s an order form further on this newsletter. Hope you like your t-shirts baggy, as they are all one size –huge! All proceeds from the sale of these will go to the various charities which received the money from the Nelson Mandela concert, i.e. The Anti-Apartheid Movement, Oxfam, Christian Aid, War on Want, Save the Children, The Catholic Fund for Overseas Development, The International Defence And Aid Fund, and the Bishop Ambrose Reeves Trust.

Also later in this newsletter is an order from for a set of live colour photographs of the band, all of which were taken at Hammersmith Odeon (20 photos in all). Some were taken by photographer Edward Poore, and some by Douglas Forrest (the artist we featured in one of last year´s newsletter). Inevitably, Mark, John and Eric Clapton are featured most as it´s much more difficult to get shots of the other guys, but the set does contain some of Alan, Guy and Chris. Terry unfortunately isn´t featured since he is always hidden behind that vast drumkit. If you want to order a set, PLEASE try and do so before about September 23rd, so I have some idea how many sets I need to get printed –it´s much easier for me if I can get all done at once!

Ok, on with the rest of the news. By the time you read this, Guy will be married! He and Lauri-Ann were married on August 13th at a tiny village in Devon, where Guy´s parents live. They were both hoping there would be no publicity before the wedding, so it was kept a closely guarded secret. However, somehow the local paper there managed to find out, and carried a highly inaccurate front-page story the week before, in which Lauri-Ann was called Lois and was described as an American actress! It also said there would be “a galaxy of pop and rock stars” in attendance, plus “other members of Dire Straits including Mark Knopfler and Hal Lindes”. Mark did indeed attend, as did Alan (who was best-man) but the press and the onlookers who turned up on the day expecting a star-studded turn-out would have been disappointed, as nobody else famous was there! Luckily the day didn’t turn into a circus –it was quiet, mainly family affair –just how Guy and Lauri-Ann wanted it.

Jack, meanwhile, is getting usd to being a dad. As you will probably have heard Mark announce at the Mandela concert, Jack and his wife Maria now have twin daughters, born just before the shows (June 1st). They are called Caitlin and Nadine, and are doing fine. The Sonni family have just moved from Los Angeles to Santa Barbara, and Jack is currently working for a guitar company, dealing in research into new amplifiers, etc.

John is also about to become a dad, for the second time. His girlfriend Tracey is due to have her baby in a few weeks time (as far as we know, it´s ONE baby –not more twins…)

Now to the question I am asked ALL the time: when is the band going to do more gigs/club dates? I know Mark indicated that they might do some during the summer –he said on stage at Hammersmith one night. However, this was a “spur of the moment” announcement, and so far it has been impossible for them to do any shows.
Apart from anything else, Alan was in Hawaii on holiday, Terry has been in the USA touring with Paul Carrack (support to Belinda Carlisle), and John has been all over the place doing promotion for the “Glass” album. Mark himself has, in fact, played a couple of times in London since the June shows, once at the Brixton Academy with a group called The Bhundu Boys, and once at The Mean Fiddler with Brendan Crocker –both were very last-minute appearances.

Alan, Terry and John are all back in the UK now, but in a couple of days, Mark and Alan fly to Dallas to start rehearsals with Eric Clapton´s band. They are both in his group for the forth coming US tour, and for those of you in the US who would like to get to one of the shows, here are the dates:

Terry Williams is also heading for the US, just a few days after Alan and Mark. He´s working on the forthcoming Dave Edmunds album in New York from August 24th until September 6th, and then there´s an album with Dion to do (also in New York) until the middle of October.

So… as you can see, there can be no Dire Straits gigs in the foreseeable future. Sorry! I wish I DID have some news for you, but there you go –nothing I can do about it… it seems that none of the guys have anything set for the end of the year though, so we´ll have to see what happens then.

On or about October 25th, a Dire Straits compilation album will be released worldwide (title: Money for Nothing). This will feature the following tracks: “Sultans of Swing”, “Down to the Waterline”, “Portobello Belle” (live from Paris 1983), “Twisting by the pool”, “Romeo & Juliet”, “Where do you think you are going”, “Walk of life”, “Private Investigations”, “Money for Nothing”, “Tunnel of love” and “Brothers in Arms”. “Telegraph Road” will be on the cassette and compact disc versions, but doesn’t fit on the LP version.

Most of you will of course have all these tracks except for the live version of “Portobello Belle” and possibly “Twisting by the pool”, but the record company are, under the terms of their contract with the band, allowed to release one “Greatest Hits” –type record during the period of the contract, and now is the time they have chosen, presumably because there is no other Dire Straits product out at the moment for it to clash with.

Now for some of your questions:

Was the Ben E. King album which Mark worked on ever released? Yes, it´s called “Save the Last Dance for me” (EMI-Manhattan/Capitol). Mark and Guy are on a couple of tracks including the title track, and other musicians featured include John Paul Jones, Jimmy Helms and Ruby Turner.

Where can I get information about David Knopfler? Trish Hillis, who is actually on the D.S.I.S. mailing list, has just started the O.D.K.I.S. (Official David Knopfler Information Service) with David´s approval. Did Mark race at Silverstone this year? No, but Guy did (his first race!) and he came 2nd in the Celebrity race.

Will there be a Dire Straits 1989 calendar? We have not done one ourselves, and although there is an unofficial coming out (like there was for 1988) we won´t be selling them through this office this time, mainly because we don´t like the pictures… However, if you want one, it is published by Cultureshock in London, and will be sold in various high street stores in the UK later this year.

When are you going to run another competition? NOW! And here´s the question: At the Nelson Mandela concert in June, Dire Stratis were joined by Eric Clapton, and one of the songs they did was Eric´s “Wonderful Tonight”. As far as Brendan knows, neither have been deleted, so you should be able to order them if you can´t find them in the shops.

I´m sure a lot of you are wondering where Mark´s questionnaire is –you may recall it was supposed to be in this newsletter. Well, I´m afraid he hasn´t done it yet. He has the questions at home, but in the last few weeks, he´s been remixing at Air Studios for the Greatest Hits album practically every day. In addition, he has posed for Madame Tussauds, who are currently making a waxwork of him to be featured in a rock´n roll exhibition next summer at the London Pavillion, Picadilly Circus (more about that nearer the time), and before that he was working on the recently released Joan Armatrading album “The shouting Stage” (A&M). so… i´m afraid you´ll have to wait…

P.S. lots of you have asked which one I was at Hammersmith Odeon in June… well, I´m fairly tall, fairly thin, and with longish wavy blonde hair. The first night I was wearing faded tatty jeans and a t-shirt, and the second night I was wearing a black mini-skirt and green cut-off top, if that gives you any clues. For those of you who DID recognise me, and have asked who the tall blonde girl with me was (mostly GUYS who asked, of course!!!) –that was Anna-Brit, and you can forget any ideas you may have because she lives with Pat Cash!
