Hola a todo el mundo,

Estamos muy contentos aquí hoy –el single de Money for Nothing está el número 4 de la lista de singles del Reino Unido y el LP ha estado número 1 durante las últimas dos semanas! Esto hace el single el segundo con más éxito en el Reino Unido (después de Private Investigations).

En estos momentos están en medio de la gira por Estados Unidos, y las cosas están yendo muy bien allí. Nunca ha sido particularmente bueno en Estados Unidos anteriormente, especialmente en lo que a ventas se refiere, pero esta vez parece ser que los americanos lo han pillado por fin!. El LP es número 10, y el single en el Top 30, y el album ha vendido más de 850.000 copias. Los conciertos también están yendo muy bien: superaron el record en Chicago con 28.500 personas, y tuvimos que añadir algunos conciertos extras. En un principio se iban a hacer solo tres conciertos en New York (con 6.000 personas por noche) y acabamos de añadir Madison Square Garden 17.000) in un par de conciertos más a las afueras de New York. Parece ser que es el centro de todo… Yo vuelo a LA a principios de Septiembre para unirme al grupo durante un tiempo, con lo que os comentaré las noticias desde esa parte del Atlántico en la próxima carta (espero poder mandaros otra carta antes de los conciertos de Diciembre en el Reino Unido).
Muchas gracias por todas vuestras cartas que han ido llegando desde los conciertos del verano. El grupo disfrutó mucho aquí, y están deseando hacer los conciertos en locales más pequeños durante las Navidades. Y sobre todo, están deseando tocar en el Hammersmith en vez de Wembley Arena (todos los que estuvisteis allí recordará lo estricta que fue la seguridad, y Mark se enfadó bastante porque hicieron que la audiencia se sentara durante casi todo el concierto). Esto no será un problema en Hammersmith –os podréis levantar y bailar tanto como deseéis!

Muchos de vosotros escribisteis y preguntasteis si fui yo la que visteis en la televisión la noche del Concierto Real (el 4 de Julio) –bien, si que era yo- pero no suelo estar tan guapa! El príncipe Charles me preguntó si nuestra empresa se llamaba Mad Managment –así que tuve que explicar que no era así, sino Damage, aunque “Mad” (loco) nos pegaría bastante también!! El y la Princesa Diana disfrutaron del concierto como seguramente leeríais en los periódicos, incluso se levantaron y bailaron durante el Walk of Life y Two Young Lovers (qué pasó con el protocolo real?). Recientemente recibimos una carta de Charles diciendo que los dos lo pasaron muy bien en el concierto, y por supuesto, por conocer a Bob Geldof en el concierto de los Straits, acabaron yendo al concierto Live Aid también. Estoy seguro que aquellos de vosotros que no estuvisteis en Wembley Stadium, lo visteis por la televisión, con lo que no es necesario que os diga el día tan maravilloso que pasamos todos los que fuimos. En realidad, pasamos casi todo el día allí (con todo el calor que hacía!) y tan pronto como la banda terminó su parte tuvimos que correr de vuelta al Arena donde hacían su propio concierto. Después de eso, había una Live Aid fiesta en Legends, un club en Londres, y terminamos yéndonos a dormir a las 7 de la mañana del domingo, así que estuve fuera de juego casi todo el día. Aquella noche se suponía que la teníamos libre (14 de Julio) pero terminamos dando un concierto extra en el Arena (que fue anunciado sólo tres días antes) el cual se vendió todo! Durante los conciertos en Wembley, yo trabajaba de las 10 de la mañana hasta las 7 de la tarde aquí en la oficina y luego, desde las 8 hasta la 1 de la mañana en los conciertos, así que al final de los quince días, estaba completamente hecha polvo.

El grupo voló a USA al día siguiente, así que ahora estamos un poco más tranquilos aquí, y tengo 6 semanas para ponerme al día con la lista antes de que vuele para reunirme con ellos.

Si no estuvisteis en los conciertos de Wembley, quizás estéis interesados en saber que casi todas las noches tuvieron artistas invitados en los conciertos incluido: Swing, Pete Townsend, Hank Marvin, Paul Brady, Dave Edmundo, Nils Lofgren (de la banda de Springsteen) y bradford Marsalis de la banda de Sting.

The Tube grabó el concierto del 10 de Julio y esperamos que lo televisen en Diciembre aunque no me han dado todavía ninguna fecha concreta. Tampoco sé si van a televisar lo que grabaron en Israel separadamente o si lo pondrán junto con lo que grabaron de Wembley. Espero poder deciros algo más en mi próxima carta. De momento no hay planes de sacar el concierto de Wembley en video (las canciones que el grupo está tocando en esta gira son bastante parecidas a las del Alchemy) así que deberíais tener una cinta de video virgen preparada…

Dear everyone,
We're feeling pretty happy here today - the Money For Nothing single is at no. 4 in the UK charts and the LP has been back at no. 1 for the past two weeks! That makes the single the group's second most successful one in the UK (after Private Investigations).

They are currently in the middle of their US tour, and things are also going extremely well there. They have never done particularly well there before, especially as far as record sales go, but this time it seems like the Americans have caught on at last! The LP is no. 10, and the single in the Top 30, and the album has sold over 850,000 there. The shows are also going down a storm: They broke the house record in Chicago with 28,500 people, and we've had to add some extra shows. They were originally only doing three nights in New York (to 6,000 people a night) and we have just added Madison Square Garden (17,000) and a couple of other big shows just outside New York. Things really seem to be happening there... I'm actually flying out to LA at the beginning of September to join the group for a while, so I'll tell you all the news from that side of the Atlantic in the next newsletter (hopefully I'll be able to get another one done before the UK shows in December). Thanks for all your letters that have been arriving since the summer shows here. The group had a great time here, and they can't wait to do the smaller halls at Xmas time. They are particularly looking forward to doing Hammersmith instead of Wembley Arena (those of you who were at the Wembley shows will recall how strict the security staff were, and Mark was very annoyed that they made the audience sit down through most of the concert). This won't be a problem at Hammersmith - you can stand up and dance as much as you like there!
A lot of you wrote and asked if it was me you saw on TV the night of the Royal Show (July 4th) - well, yes it was - but I don't usually look that smart! Prince Charles asked me if our company was called Mad Management - so I had to explain that it wasn't, it was called Damage, although 'Mad' would fit just as well!! He and Princess Diana really enjoyed themselves at the show and as you probably read in the papers, they even got up and danced about during Walk Of Life and Two Young Lovers (whatever happened to Royal protocol?). We have recently had a very nice letter from Charles saying how they both had a wonderful time at the gig, and of course, through meeting Bob Geldof at the Straits show, they also ended up attending the Live Aid concert. I'm sure those of you who weren't actually at Wembley Stadium watched it on TV, so I don't need to tell you what a great day it was for all concerned. We actually spent most of the day there (in scorching heat!) and as soon as the band had done their part we rushed back over to The Arena where they played their own show. After that, there was a Live Aid party at Legends night-club in London, and I ended up going to bed at about 7 o'clock on Sunday morning, so I was out for the count most of the day. That evening was supposed to be a night off for us (14th July) but we ended up putting on an extra show at The Arena (only announced three days beforehand) which completely sold out! During the Wembley shows I was working l0 AM till 7 PM here at the office and then 8 PM till l AM at the shows, so by the end of the fortnight I was completely knackered!

The group left for the USA the next day, so now it is a bit quieter here, and I have six weeks to catch up with the mail before I fly out to join them.
If you weren't at the Wembley shows you may be interested to know that there were guest musicians playing with the Straits most nights and these included: Sting, Pete Townsend, Hank Marvin, Paul Brady, Dave Edmunds, Nils Lofgren (from Bruce Springsteen's band) and Branford Marsalis from Sting's band.
The Tube filmed the Wembley concert on July 10th and will hopefully be screening it in December although they haven't given me an exact date yet. I also don't know whether they are going to screen the footage they shot in Israel separately, or whether they will tack it onto the Wembley footage. I should be able to let you know in the next newsletter. There are no plans to release the Wembley footage as a video-cassette (the set the group are playing on this tour is fairly similar to the Alchemy one) so you should have a blank video ready...
