Lo primero de todo es Feliz año 1991 a todos vosotros! Espero que hayáis tenido unas felices navidades y un feliz año nuevo, y gracias de toda la banda y todos aquí en la ofician, a todo el mundo que envió felicitaciones.
Siento que esta carta llegue tan tarde, pero decidimos hacerla mejor en Enero que en Diciembre porque a/ nos hemos cambiado de oficinas (caos!!) y b/ queríamos poner en la carta los detalles para reservar las entradas de la primera parte del tour, cuyas fechas no estuvieron confirmadas hasta hace poquito.

No olvidaros de cambiarlo en vuestra agenda. Para aquellos que os estáis preguntando donde está Londres W11 –está cerca de Notting Hill Gate. Si, ahora somos todos Notting Hillbillies!
Por supuesto, hemos tenido 5 años razonablemente tranquilos durante los cuales podíamos haber hecho el cambio de oficinas sin tanto stress, pero no, hemos decidido hacerlo AHORA cuando más ocupados estamos… Nos van a instalar un nuevo sistema informático el cual nadie sabe como funciona todavía, con lo que si no volvéis a saber de mi nunca más, será porque he perdido toda mi información mientras que lo pasaba de un sistema al otro… (pensáis que estoy bromeando??!!!)…
Ahora las noticias que todo el mundo ha estado esperando (durante probablemente los últimos cinco años!): el nuevo álbum de Dire Straits está de camino, y suena fantástico, por supuesto. Los planes de momento es que salga un single a nivel mundial a principios de Abril, y que el álbum salga a mitad de Mayo. Esto puede cambiar un poco –la banda no ha empezado a mezclar todavía.

Entonces vendrá la tan esperada gira. Después de la gira “Live In ´85/86´´ que fue tan larga que casi acaba con todos nosotros, hemos planeado que esta no sea tan larga y tan penosa, pero ya parece que de momento serán 14 meses! Más tarde en esta carta, encontraréis más detalles sobre la primera sección de fechas, más un formulario para los conciertos del Reino Unido. Aquellos que viven en otros países tendréis detalles de fechas relevantes en las siguientes cartas. De momento parece que haremos Norteamérica y Canadá, Sudamérica, Australia y Nueva Zelanda, Europa II en ese orden, entre el verano de 1991 y verano de 1992. Pero de todos modos, no hay ningún concierto confirmado exceptuando la primera sección.

La formación de la banda no está terminada al 100%, pero hay un par de cambios: Mark, John, Alan, Guy y Chris se quedan. Pero hay un nuevo batería, y un segundo guitarra. Terry Williams no estará ni en el álbum ni en la gira y ha sido sustituido por Chris Whitten (ex Paul McCartney. De todos modos, en lo que se refiere al álbum, el batería en la mayoría de las canciones es Jeff Porcado. Aquellos que suelan leer los créditos de los discos conocerá el nombre ya que ha tocado literalmente con cientos de grandes músicos a lo largo de los años, incluyendo a Steely Dan y Madonna, y también fue un miembro de Toto. Sentimos mucho que Terry se haya ido, pero desgraciadamente las cosas no funcionaban musicalmente hablando. Como dije en mi última carta, Jack tampoco está con nosotros y ha sido sustituido por Phil Palmer, Phil ha tocado con la banda de Paul Brady en el pasado por eso lo conocemos bien, y por supuesto, estuvo en el escenario con Mark/Eric/Elton en Knebworth ya que era parte de la banda que Clapton llevaba en su gira por aquel entonces.

En adición, como ya dejé entrever en mi pasada carta, tenemos a Paul Franklin en la pedal-steel (a quien conoceréis si visteis la gira de los Notting Hillbillies). También hemos añadido un percusionista llamado Danny Cummings (ahora mismo está de gira con George Michael). Contrariamente a los rumores, no voy a tocar el triángulo en esta gira, estaré demasiado ocupada haciendo las entradas, listas de invitados, etc…

Parece que el tour va a tener el mismo esponsor que el último, Philips Compact Disc y puede que tenga un sub sponsor que será Levis. Por supuesto, tendremos nuevo merchandise hecho para ser vendido en los conciertos y desde aquí, por correo. Vamos a tener nuevos diseños que irán viniendo durante los próximos meses. De hecho, ese número de cosas que se supone que vamos a tener que hacer “en los próximos meses” suena bastante desolador!!! (no estás bromeando! –Ed)

Ahora seguiré con otras cositas, y volveré a los detalles del tour más tarde en esta carta.

CARTAS ANTIGUAS: muchos de vosotros me habéis preguntado si es posible conseguir cartas antiguas. Bien, no vamos a hacer copias de las cartas que ya hemos mandado, pero si queréis pedir algunas de las que ya tenemos en stock no hay problema. Precio: 1 libra por carta (envío incluido) para los fans del Reino Unido, 5 x IRC (envío incluido) para los fans de fuera del Reino Unido. Formulario al final de esta carta.

NOTTING HILLBILLIES: podréis recordar de mi última carta que mencioné que el consenso general de opinión fue que los conciertos de Liverpool y Derby fueron los mejores de la gira. Debbie Scrivens and Lindsey Parkinson escribieron para decir que deberíamos de haberlas mencionado por ser las mejores fans de la gira… por levantarse y bailar todo el tiempo mientras que el resto seguían pegados al asiento (especialmente en Oxford). Así que, ya que la banda aprecia su entusiasmo y alegría, efectivamente ganan el premio de “fans de la gira”!!

FOTOS NOTTING HILLBILLIES: estoy encantada que aquellos que pidieron las fotos, les gusten tanto. Todavía tenemos algunos sets, con lo que podéis mandar un sobre con los sellos y “Fotos” si queréis más detalles. Me gustaría agradecer al miembro de DSIS Carolyn Dean, que hizo todas las fotos, por su duro trabajo en este proyecto y durante los pasados años. Carolyne –llámame ya que tenemos en las oficinas un regalo para ti!.

DISCOGRAFIA: he recibido un montón de peticiones para que ponga la discografía puesta al día, con lo que encontrareis una en esta carta. Es una completa de lo que salió en el Reino Unido (sería virtualmente imposible para mi hacer un listado con el número de catálogo de todo el mundo!). Debido a los costes de envío, especialmente para fuera del Reino Unido, hemos empequeñecido la lista para que entrase en dos páginas. De todos modos, si tenéis dificultades en leerla y queréis una a tamaño real, enviadme un sobre de tamaño mediano con los sellos y marcar el sobre con DISCOGRAFÍA.

ÁLBUM DE CHRIS WHITE: En mi última carta dije que saldría en Septiembre u Octubre en todo el mundo –bien, no ha salido todavía (una historia muy larga…). Se supone que tiene que salir en Marzo, y el título ha sido cambiado –ahora se llama “Shadowdance” (bastante más inspirado que “Chris White & Friendo). Desde la última carta, algunas canciones han sido añadidas, y en particular, Mark ha añadido más con su guitarra en un par de canciones. De momento, no os puedo dar el número de catálogo para cada país, pero intentaré hacer una lista para la carta de Marzo si no habéis conseguido comprar el disco todavía.

FANS EN LA UNIVERSIDAD: algunos de vosotros me habéis escrito dándome dos direcciones, la de vuestros colegios universitarios y la de casa y me habéis puesto cuándo estáis donde. No podemos empezar a cambiar nuestros datos cada varias semanas, con lo que tenemos que tener UNA dirección por fan donde mandar todas las cartas.

NECK & NECK: he recibido bastantes cartas de gente que ha comprado el álbum y les encanta. Para aquellos que habéis preguntado –si, hay un single “Poor boy blues” que no llegó muy lejos en las listas… Si no lo habéis escuchado todavía, os recomiendo definitivamente el álbum. En muchos países europeos (pero no en el Reino Unido) “The next time i´m in town” ha sido editado (o está a punto de serlo) como single.

ERIC CLAPTON –ALBERT HALL, FEB/MAR ´91: estoy recibiendo muchas llamadas sobre estos conciertos, principalmente preguntando si Mark va a tocar en alguno de ellos. Bien, aquellos que llevéis un tiempo en la lista recordará hace dos años, Mark dijo que NO iba a tocar (y luego tocó con Clapton), y el año pasado dijo que SI que iba a tocar con él ( y luego no lo hizo). Así que… me rindo en predecir lo que Mark va a hacer! De cualquier modo, ya que la banda está grabando seis días a la semana, mañanas, tardes y noches, pienso que será bastante improbable que Mark tenga tiempo.

GUY ES PAPA: justo después de que saliese la carta de Agosto del año pasado, la mujer de Guy, Lauri-Ann tuvo a su niño –es un chico y se llama Maxfield.

CAPITAL TOP 500: quizás estáis interesados en saber que la radio independiente más importante de Londres ha hecho una recopilación de “Top 500 de todos los tiempos” (los discos votados a través de los años por la audiencia), y Money for Nothing fue el número 6. Otras canciones de Dire Straits también entraron en la lista (Romeo & Juliet, “Private Investigations”, “Walk of Life” and “Sultans of Swing”). En caso de que os estéis preguntando quien estaba en los primeros puestos, aquí os pongo el Top 5: George Michael –“Careless Whisper”, Phil Collins –“Against all odds”, Madonna –“Vogue”, Queen –“Bohemian Rhapsody”, and Led Zeppelin –“Stairway to Heaven”.

CONCIERTO DEL ALCHEMY REPETIDO EN LA TV: los que padezcan insomnio puede que viesen el “Alchemy” en el Channel 4 la otra noche –a la 1 de la mañana… Espero que os entrasen ganas de conciertos (incluso a pesar de que era antiguo!)

NOMINACIONES PARA LOS GRAMMYS: acabo de escuchar que Mark y Chet han recibido dos nominaciones por el álbum “Neck & Neck” en la categoría de música country. La primera es “Poor boy Blues” –mejor colaboración vocal de country y la segunda es “So long, your goodbye” –mejor canción instrumental de country. Os haremos saber como han quedado en la próxima carta.

VIAJES EN AUTOBUS: aquellos de vosotros que hayáis recibido una carta mía en los últimos meses sabrán que hemos estado avisando a los fans de no mandar depósitos de dinero a varias compañías de autobuses que anunciaban viajes para ver a la banda en el extranjero. La razón de esto fue que los anuncios empezaron a aparecer mucho antes de que los conciertos estuviesen confirmados, y no les prometimos ninguna entrada a ninguna compañía, con lo que en realidad, estaban cogiendo dinero para algo que no estaban en situación de poder dar. Ya que estaban pidiendo depósitos de 30 libras por entrada, ya os podéis imaginar el interés que tenían, a pesar de que eventualmente tendrían que devolver los depósitos si no tenían entradas para dar. Las compañías principales fueron The Concert Travel Club in Barnstaple, Lowestoft Concert Travel Club in Great Yarmouth, and Intaland Concert Travel in Alfreton – y os aconsejaríamos no tener nada que ver con estas compañías.

COLIN CAMPBELL: es posible que hayáis leído en algunos periódicos la historia de este “músico/productor de rock” llamado Colin Campbell, que fue convicto por obtener sexo con amenazas. Muchos periódicos dijeron que “trabajó con Dire Straits”. Me gustaría dejar claro algo: Collin Campbell nunca ha trabajado con la banda de ninguna de las formas. De hecho, ni siquiera habíamos sabido de él hasta que leímos el caso en los periódicos! Sabe alguien quién es o qué instrumento toca? Sería interesante saberlo…

First of all, Happy 1991 to you all! Hope you had a good Christmas and New Year, and thanks from all the band and everyone here at the office to everybody who sent cards.

Sorry this newsletter is late, but we decided to do it in January rather than December because a/ we have been moving offices (chaos!) and b/ we wanted to put in the booking details for the first set of tour dates, some of which weren´t confirmed until recently.

Don´t forget to change it in your address book. For those of you who are wondering where London W11 is –it´s near Notting Hill Gate. Yes, we are all Notting Hillbillies now!
Of course, we´ve had five reasonably quiet years during which we could have moved without too much upheaval, but no, we´ve decided to do it NOW when we´re at our very busiest… We will be getting a new computer system which none of us can operate, so if you never hear from me again, it will be because I´ve lost my entire Information Service programme whilst transferring it from one system to another… (you think I´m joking??!!!)…
Now for the news you´ve all been waiting for (probably for the past five years!): The new Dire Straits album is well underway, and sounding just fantastic, of course. The plan at present is for a single to come out worldwide in early April, and for the album to be released worldwide in mid-May. This may change slightly –the band have not even begun mixing it yet.

Then comes the long awaited tour. After the “Live In ´85/86´´ tour, which was so long it nearly finished us all off, we had planned that this one would not be nearly so long and gruelling, but it already looks like running for about 14 months! Later on in this newsletter you will find details of the first section of tour dates, plus a booking form for the UK shows. Those of you who live in other parts of the world will get details of relevant dates in forthcoming newsletters. At present, it looks like running North America and Canada, South America, Australia and New Zealand, Europe II, in that order, between summer 1991 and summer 1992. However, no shows apart from the first section are confirmed yet.

The band line-up isn´t 100% finalised, but there are a couple of changes: Mark, John, Alan, Guy and Chris remain. But there´s a new drummer, and a new second-guitarist. Terry Williams will not be on the album or tour, and has been replaced by Chris Whitten (ex-Paul McCartney). However, as far as the album is concerned, the drummer for most tracks is Jeff Porcaro. Those of you who read album credits will know the name as he´s played with literally hundreds of top acts over the years including Steely Dan and Madonna, and he was also a member of Toto. We were all sorry to see Terry go, but unfortunately, things just weren´t working out musically. As I said in the last newsletter, Jack is also no longer with us, and he´s been replaced by Phil Palmer. Phil has played with the Paul Brady Band in the past so we all know him well, and of course he was onstage with Mark/Eric/Elton at Knebworth since he was part of Eric Clapton´s touring band at the time.

In addition, as I hinted in the last newsletter, we have Paul Franklin on pedal-steel guitar (who you´ll know if you saw the Hillbillies tour). We´ve also added a percussion player called Danny Cummings (currently playing on George Michael´s tour). Contrary to rumours, I will no be playing the triangle on tour, I will be far too busy doing tickets, guest-lists, etc…
It looks as if the tour will be sponsored in the same way as the last one, by Philips Compact Disc, and may be sub sponsored by Levis. We will, of course, have a brand new range of merchandise made up, to be sold on the road and by mail order from here. We´ll be getting designs together over the next couple of months. In fact, the number of things we´re supposed to be doing “over the next couple of months” is looking rather daunting!!! (you are not kidding! –Ed).

Now I´ll move on to other bits and pieces, and will come back to tour details later in this newsletter.

AIDS CHARITY PRIZE DRAW: (this was a UK-only draw, in case overseas fans are wondering what I´m talking about!). Thanks to all of you who entered –we raised over 1.600 pounds for the Terrence Higgins Trust. Practically everyone who sent in received something, however small, but here´s a list of the three main prizewinners: 1st prize –Dire Straits triple gold disc award: David Noble. 2nd prize –Dire Straits cd award: Karen Edwards. 3rd prize –Mistery Prize: Alan English. A complete list of prize-winners is available on request. Overseas fans –don´t feel left out –I´ll be doing something similar for your in a future newsletter.

NOTTING HILLBILLIES: You may recall in the last newsletter I mentioned that the general consensus of opinion was that Liverpool and Derby were the best gigs of the tour. Debbie Scrivens and Lindsey Parkinson wrote in to say I should have mentioned them as being the best fans on the tour… for getting up and dancing about while all around them stayed firmly glued to their seats (specially at Oxford). So, since the band much appreciated their enthusiasm and liveliness, they do indeed win the “fans of the tour” award!

NOTTING HILLBILLIES PHOTOS: so glad those of you who ordered these liked them so much. We still have a few sets left, so send a stamped addressed envelope marked “photos” if you want details. I´d like to take this opportunity of thanking DSIS member Carolyn Dean, who took all the photos, for her hard work on this project and over the past couple of years. Carolyne –give me a call as we have a nice thank-you present here for you!

DISCOGRAPHY: I´ve had loads of requests for a proper up-to-date discography, so you´ll find one in this letter. It´s a complete list of UK releases (it would be virtually impossible for me to list every release and catalogue number for the entire world!). Because of the postage costs, especially to overseas territories, we have reduced this to fit it onto two pages. However, if you find it too hard to read and want a full-size copy, send me a medium-size s.a.e. (overseas fans send IRC). Mark the back of your envelope “DISCOGRAPHY”.

CHRIS WHITE´S ALBUM: in the last newsletter I said this was due for release in September or October worldwide –well, it´s still not out (long story…). It is now due out in March, an the title has been changed –it´s now called “Shadowdance” (slightly more inspired than “Chris White & Friends”). Since the last newsletter, some of the tracks have been added to, and in particular, Mark has now added some great guitar to a couple of them. As yet, I still can´t give you the catalogue numbers for each country, but will try and list tem in the March newsletter if you haven´t managed to acquire a copy by then.

FANS AT COLLEGE: a few of you have written to give me a term time address and a home address, plus the dates of your college terms. We cannot start changing our files every few weeks, so we must just have ONE address per fan to which all newsletter are sent.

NECK AND NECK: have had many letters from people who´ve got this album and loved it. For those of you who asked –yes, there was a single released from the album (Poor boy blues) which didn´t exactly take the charts by storm… If you haven´t yet heard or got the album though, I would strongly recommend you try to do so. In many European countries (but not the UK) “The next time I´m in town” has just been (or is about to be) released as a single.

ERIC CLAPTON –ALBERT HALL, FEB/MAR ´91: i´m getting loads of calls about these shows, mainly from people asking if Mark´s going to play at any of them. Well, those of you who have been on my mailing list for a few years will remember that two years ago, Mark said he WASN´T going to play (and then did), and that last year, he said he WAS going to play (and then didn´t). So… I have given up trying to predict what Mark might do! However, since the band are recording six days a week, morning, noon, and night, I think it unlikely he´ll have time.

GUY BECOMES A DAD: just after the August newsletter was sent out, Guy´s wife Lauri-Ann had her baby –a boy, which they have named Maxfield.

CAPITAL TOP 500: you may be interested to know that London´s main independent radio stations, Capital Radio, compiled an “All time Top 500” (records voted for throughout the years by listeners), and “Money for Nothing” was number 6. Various other DS tracks also made it into the chart (Romeo & Juliet, “Private Investigations”, “Walk of Life” and “Sultans of Swing”. “ALCHEMY” CONCERT REPEATED ON UK TV: insomniacs may have caught the “Alchemy” concert on Channel 4 the other night – at 1:00 am… Hope it got you in the mood for the forthcoming concerts (even thogh it was somewhat out of date!)

GRAMMY NOMITATIONS: have just heard that Mark and Chet have received two Grammy nominations for the “Neck & Neck” album, in the country music category. The first is “Poor boy blues” –best country vocal collaboration, and the second is “So Long, your goodbye” –Best country instrumental performance. Will let you know how they fared in the next newsletter.

COACH TRIPS: those of you in the UK who have received correspondence from me in the past couple of months will know that we have been advising fans not to send deposits off to various coach companies advertising trips to see the band overseas. The reason for this was that ads started appearing long before the shows were confirmed, and we hadn´t promised ANY tickets to ANY coach companies, so they were, in fact, taking money for something they were not in a position to provide. Since they were taking deposits of up to 30 pounds per ticket, you can imagine how much interest they stood to make, even if the eventually had to return the deposits, having no tickets to provide. The main offenders were The Concert Travel Club in Barnstaple, Lowestoft Concert Travel Club in Great Yarmouth, and Intaland Concert Travel in Alfreton –and we would advise you not to have anything to do with these companies.

COLIN CAMPBELL: you may have read in various newspapers recently a story about a “rock musician/producer” called Colin Campbell, who was convicted of obtaining sex by threats. Many papers reported that he had “worked with Dire Straits”. I would just like to set the record straight: Collin Campbell has never worked with the band at any time in any capacity. In fact, we´d never even heard of him until we read about the case in the paper! Does anyone know who he is or what instrument he plays? We´d be interested to know…
