Hola a todo el mundo,

Lo primero de todo es daros las gracias a aquellos que pujasteis por los artículos en la venta de beneficencia. Ya hemos recibido 4.250 libras y todavía falta algo por venir, con lo que deberíamos llegar a las 5.000 libras esterlinas que se irán a la Fundación contra el Sida de Elton John y Terrence Higgings Trust. Pondré más detalles sobre esto después en esta misma carta.

Tengo que ser honesta con vosotros y decir que no hay muchas noticias ahora mismo, con lo que esta carta será más bien cortita. De cualquier modo, ya habréis descubierto ahora mismo el pequeño regalito que os he puesto, el cual espero que os guste. Si, todo el mundo ha conseguido un pase como souvenir de la gira On Every Street! La semana pasada, mientras que un compañero miraba una caja de las de vuelo de la gira, encontró una caja llena de pases de diferentes conciertos, y después de contarlos, vimos que habían suficientes para todos los miembros del DSIS. Hay varios diferentes, algunos tendréis pases para fotógrafos, otros para local crew, otros para teloneros, otros para el backstage y otros para después del concierto, y son de diferentes ciudades.

Ahora parece un poco injusto para los que habéis pujado para comprar uno (antes de descubrir la caja). Así que para aquellos que ganaron la puja de uno de los pases de la gira “On Every Street” , he conseguido encontrar unos pases especiales laminados de la gira “Brothers in Arms” (Acceso a todas las áreas) y de la gira “On Every Street” (VIP). Los enviaré en una semana más o menos.

Ahora a las noticias:

ALBUM EN DIRECTO

Se editará en CD/Casete el 10 de Mayo en todos los territorios (Excepto USA que será el 12 de Mayo) y se llamará On the Night, aunque, por favor, no propagar esto ya que estamos intentando guardar el secreto todavía. Después de haber visto y escuchado todo lo que se grabó durante la gira, la selección final se ha cogido de dos conciertos Nimes y Rotterdam. Las canciones serán las siguientes:

Calling Elvis/Walk of life/Heavy Fuel/Romeo & Juliet/Private Investigations/Your latest trick/On Every Street/You and your friend/Money for Nothing/Brothers in Arms

Eso hace un CD. La idea es de editar al mismo tiempo un CD single con Your latest Trick y tres canciones extras más The Bug/Solid Rock/Local Hero.

La razón de hacerlo así es tecnológica –no voy a ir al detalles pero lo máximo que tiene un CD son 76,15. Hay CDs que duran más, pero algunos CD Players (especialmente los antiguos) no los aceptan, debido a que el mecanismo falla al no reconocer la duración del cd. Las tiendas nos dice que mucha gente devuelve los cds de larga duración porque su reproductor no los acepta, de forma que, para estar seguros de que todo el mundo que tenga un reproductor de cds pueda escuchar este cd nos hemos limitado a la duración oficial de un cd. Esto significa que al no poder introducir todas las canciones en un solo cd, editamos un single extra. Y el título propuesto es “Encores”.

El album y single serán producidos por Guy, Neil Dorfsman y Mark, y mezclado por Neil. La carátula es bastante rara, es toda naranja con un dibujo azul de algunos satélites, representando el hecho de que es “en vivo”, “a todo el mundo” y esas cosas. Difícil de describir, tenéis que verlo por vosotros mismos!

En algunos lugares, el album se editará en formato vinilo también y será un doble LP vendido al precio de un LP.

VIDEO DEL CONCIERTO

Este saldrá el mismo día que el álbum y tendrá el mismo título. La lista de canciones es: Calling Elvis/Walk of Life/Heavy Fuel/Romeo & Juliet/ The Bug/Private Investigations/Your latest trick/On every Street/You and your friend/Money for Nothing/Brothers in Arms/Solid Rock/Local Hero. Tiempo de duración aproximado: 90 minutos.

CHRIS WHITE ES PAPA!

Si, Chris y Eve ya son los orgullosos papás de Alexander, nacido el 23 de Enero. Chris fue muy supersticioso y no me dejó poner nada en las cartas hasta que el bebé hubiese nacido, por eso no os lo dije antes! Alexander ya ha estado en la oficina, pero se durmió tan pronto como llegó (obviamente no quedó impresionado por nuestras personalidades).

Los calendarios han sido vendidos todos y la oferta para los recortes de prensa ya se ha acabado (la fotocopiadora tuvo un ataque de nervios), con lo que, por favor, no enviar más pedidos…

SULTANS DE QUE?

Hay un grupo nuevo que está de gira por el Reino Unido ahora mismo que se llaman Sultans of Ping FC. Si no me creéis os adjunto una copia de una crítica que apareció en una edición reciente de Music Week.

He tenido muchas llamadas de teléfono en las últimas semanas preguntando se eran los Dire Strais pero con un nombre diferente y la respuesta es un NO enfático. Así que ir y verlos vosotros mismos (no tengo ni idea de cómo son) pero por favor, no esperar que MK & Co. estén allí.

EL MANAGER DE DS, FAMOSO AL FIN

Ed Bicknell, el manager del grupo, fue votado como Music Week Personality de 1992. Ver el recorte de abajo.

LO QUE CADA UNO ESTA HACIENDO

He intentado averiguar lo que cada miembro del grupo está haciendo ahora mismo, así que aquí os pongo el resumen:

Mark y Guy: ocupados viendo todo el trabajo del album en directo y el video. Mark está recibiendo muchos guiones de películas de gente que quieren que les haga la banda sonora, pero de momento no se ha decidido por ninguno.

John, me dice que está pintando un par de obras maestras para la Nacional Gallery…

Chris White: todavía trabajando en el estudio de casa con intención de hacer un segundo album en solitario y el resto del tiempo está cambiando dodotis.

Alan ha terminado su estudio (en su jardín!) y está escribiendo su propio material.

Chris Whitten ha estado trabajando como músico de sesión, también intenta construirse su propio estudio en casa.

Phil Palmer está empezando a trabajar en el proyecto que mencioné en la carta pasada (el album con Steve Ferrone, Tony Levin, Paul Carrack y Rupert Hine).

Paul Franklin tiene un trato en USA para grabar un album en solitario. Más detalles cuando los sepa.

No tengo ni idea lo que está haciendo Danny (seguro que nada bueno…)

INFORMACION SOBRE LA GIRA

Algunos de vosotros habéis escrito preguntando cuantos conciertos hubieron en la gira “On Every Street” y sé que algunos de vosotros habéis apostado con los otros así que la respuesta es: 211 conciertos. Esto se compara con los 230 y pico en la gira del 85/6. De cualquier modo, los locales eran más grandes, con lo que la banda tocó para más gente en esta gira que en la anterior.

GANADORES/INFORMACION DE LA VENTA DE NOVIEMBRE PARA LA BENEFICIENCIA

Abajo encontraréis una lista de quien consiguió que! Muchos de los fans que pujaron para los artículos más caros no quisieron que se publicara la cantidad que pagaron por estos artículos con lo que no he puesto las cantidades exactas. De cualquier modo, para daros una idea aproximada, la chaqueta rosa de Mark, su camisa de cowboy y sus 3 cintas del pelo superaron las 1.000 libras esterlinas. También fue muy popular el disco de plata con varias pujas de cientos de pounds, el traje de chaqueta rosa de Chris White y la chaqueta negra de satén de la gira. Las fotos firmadas por todos los miembros llegaron a las 110 libras, con lo que de parte de todos nosotros, de la banda, del Terrence Higgins Trust y Elton John Aids Foundation, un gran Thaaaank yoouu para todos los que ayudasteis a alcanzar ese dinero.

Aún hay gente que no ha enviado el dinero, con lo que por favor, enviarlo lo antes que podáis para que pueda enviar el total a la beneficencia.

Es posible que hagamos otra puja a finales de este año (si puedo soportar el pensamiento de hacer algo tan complicado y que te quita tanto tiempo otra vez!!), con lo que si no conseguisteis nada esta vez, tendréis otra oportunidad.

EDICION LIMITADA DEL GRABADO DE LA GUITARRA DEL BROTHERS IN ARMS

Hemos descubierto algunos grabados de la guitarra que aparece en la parte de atrás del album del Brothers in Arms, los cuales se hicieron en un principio para promoción. Son el color, impresos en tarjetas de calidad y serían geniales en un marco. Tamaño aproximado: 12’ x 9’. Abajo hay una fotocopia reducida de uno de ellos, por supuesto no le hace justicia al original.

PASES BACKSTAGE SEGURIDAD

Mientras que recogíamos todo al final de la gira, también encontramos unos pases de backstage de seguridad. Estos se hicieron para ayudar a los de seguridad a ser diferenciados en cada local entre los varios tipos de pases, y pensamos que esto sería un artículo para coleccionista muy bonito para los miembros del DSIS. He hecho una fotocopia reducida de uno de los pases, el pase real es de 18’ x 12’ y están impresos en cartón. Hay cinco diferentes en cada set (uno en cada color) y cada set viene con uno adicional de los siguientes: “Dire Straits-Dressing Room”, “Dire Straits-Tune-Up room” o “Dire Straits-Production Office”.

Bien, pues eso es todo amigos! La próxima carta es oficialmente a finales de Mayo, pero estaré de vacaciones entonces (hurra!!!) con lo que la haré durante la primera mitad de Junio. Para entonces espero que todos tengáis el album/video en directo y que me digáis que es lo que pensáis de él.

P.S normalmente, no suelo hablar de otras bandas en estas cartas pero hoy voy a hacer la excepción. Fui a ver un grupo nuevo la semana pasada llamado TRF (The Royal Family) que hacen el set completo de Queen. Fui con toda clase de reservas, ya sabes este tipo de cosas: nadie podría hacer justicia a este tipo de canciones… pero tengo que decir que fueron geniales. Si os gustaban Queen (y sé que a muchos de vosotros os gustaba) y os perdisteis sus conciertos, o si nunca los visteis y os gusta su música, deberíais ver a esta banda. Realmente lo hacen a la perfección y con el máximo respeto hacia el grupo original. Como os he dicho, las copias no es el tipo de cosas que yo suelo ver, y estoy segura que pensareis lo mismo muchos de vosotros, pero si podéis superar los perjuicios, este grupo era simplemente muy bueno.

First off, a big thank you to everyone who bid for items in the Charity Sale. We have already received £4,250.00 and there's still quite a bit to come in, so we should end up with about £5,000.00 which will be going to The Elton John Aids Foundation and The Terrence Higgins Trust. More details about who got what later on in this letter.
I have to be honest and say there isn't a great deal of news about at the moment, so this letter will be fairly short. However, as you will by now have discovered it does contain a free gift which I hope you like. Yes, everyone gets a souvenir pass from the On Every Street tour! Last week, when one of the crew was going through a flight case from the tour, he found a box full of passes for various venues, and upon counting them, we found we had just enough for every DSIS member to have one. There are various different ones, some of you will have a Photographer pass, some a Local Crew pass, some a Support Guest Pass, some a Backstage pass, and some an After Show pass, and they are from many different cities.
Now this seemed a little unfair on those who had bid for them in the Sale (before the discovery of the box). So, for those people who made successful bids for an On Every Street tour pass, I have managed to get hold of a few special laminated passes from the Brothers In Arms tour (Access All Areas) and from the On Every Street tour (VIP). I'll be sending them off in a week or so.
On to the news:
LIVE ALBUM
This is now scheduled for release on CD/cassette on May 10th in all territories (except the USA where it will be May 12th) and will be called On The Night, although please don't broadcast the fact as we're trying to keep the title a secret for now. Having gone through the footage from every gig that was recorded on the tour, the final selection is being taken from just two of them Nîmes and Rotterdam. The track listing for the album will be as follows:
Calling Elvis / Walk Of Life / Heavy Fuel / Romeo And Juliet / Private Investigations / Your Latest Trick / On Every Street / You And Your Friend / Money For Nothing / Brothers In Arms.
That makes up one CD. The idea is to release simultaneously a CD single with Your Latest Trick and three extra songs The Bug / Solid Rock / Local Hero.
The reason for doing it this way is because of technology - I won't go into all the complications, but the maximum running time on a CD is 76.15. There are of course CDs which are slightly longer, but some CD players (especially the earlier models) won't play them, because the mechanism fails to recognise the length and won't pick up on the CD at all. Shops report that many people return CDs that have very long playing times because their particular CD player will not play them, so to make sure everyone with a player can listen to this one, we're sticking to the official maximum length. That means we can't quite fit it all on one CD, hence the extra single, the proposed title of which is Encores'.
The album and single are being produced by Guy, Neil Dorfsman and Mark, and mixed by Neil. The tentative sleeve is pretty weird it's a bold orange and blue picture of some satellites, representing the fact that it's 'live', 'world-wide' and so on. Hard to describe you really have to see it for yourself!
In some territories the album will be released in vinyl format too it will be a double LP sold at single LP price.

This will come out the same day as the album and will have the same title. CHRIS WHITE BECOMES A DAD!
Yes, Chris and Eve are now the proud parents of Alexander, born on 23rd January. Chris was too superstitious for me to put anything in a newsletter until the baby had been born, so that's why I never mentioned it before! Alexander has already visited the office but fell asleep as soon as he arrived (obviously not impressed by our normally riveting personalities).

SULTANS OF WHAT?
There's a new band called The Sultans Of Ping FC currently touring the UK. If you don't believe me, here's a copy of a single review that appeared in a recent edition of Music Week.

(...) I have had lots of phone calls over the past few weeks asking if it is really Dire Straits playing under an assumed name and the answer is an emphatic no. So go and see them by all means (I've no idea what they are like) but please don't expect MK & Co. to be there!

WHAT EVERYONE IS UP TO
I've been trying to find out what each member of the band is doing at present, so here's a quick run down:
Mark and Guy: Busy overseeing all the work on the live album and video. Mark is being sent loads of film scripts from people who want him to compose scores, but as yet he hasn't decided on any of them.
John: Tells me he is painting a couple of masterpieces for the National Gallery...
Chris White: Still working on his home studio with a view to doing second solo album, and the rest of the time he's changing nappies.
Alan: Has completed a home studio (in his garden!) and is writing his own material.
Chris Whitten: Has been working as a session musician, also intending to build a home studio.
Phil Palmer: Starting work on the project I mentioned in the last newsletter (an album with Steve Ferrone, Tony Levin, Paul Carrack and Rupert Hine).
Paul Franklin: Has secured a US deal to record a solo album more details as I find them out.
I've no idea what Danny is up to (up to no good I should think... ).
TOUR DATE INFO
A few of you have written in to ask how many dates the band played on the On Every Street tour in the end, and I know a couple of you have placed bets with each other on the answer so: The total was 211 shows. This compares with 23? on the Live In 85/6 tour; however, because the venues were bigger, the band actually played to more people on the On Every Street tour than the previous one.
NOVEMBER CHARITY SALE WINNERS/INFORMATION
Below you will find a list of who got what! Many of the fans who bid for the more expensive items didn't want the amount of their bid publicised, so I haven't listed the exact prices paid. However, to give you a rough idea, Mark's pink stage jacket, his cowboy shirt and his 3 headbands fetched well over £1,000 between them. Also very popular was the silver disc with several bids in the hundreds, Chris White's pink stage suit, and the black satin tour jacket. The band photos signed by all nine band members fetched up to £110, so on behalf of everyone here, the band, the Terrence Higgins Trust and The Elton John Aids Foundation, a big Thaaaank Yoouu to you all for helping us raise this money.

We may well do a similar auction later on this year (if I can bear the thought of doing something so time-consuming and complicated all over again!!!), so if you didn't get anything this time you'll have another chance.
BROTHERS IN ARMS LIMITED EDITION GUITAR PRINT - FREE PRIZE DRAW
We have discovered some rather beautiful limited edition prints of the guitar painting which appeared on the back of the Brothers In Arms album, which were originally done for promotional purposes. They are full colour, printed on quality card, and would look fantastic if framed. Size: approx. 12' x 9'. Below is a reduced-size photocopy of one of them, but it really doesn't do it justice.

BACKSTAGE SECURITY SIGNS
When clearing out all our stuff at the end of the tour, we also came across some of the official Backstage Security signs. These were made up to help the security staff at each venue differentiate between the various types of passes, and we thought they would make nice collectors' items for DSIS members. (...) On the next page is a reduced-size photocopy of one of the signs - the actual size is about 18' x 12' and they're printed on card. There are five signs to each set (one in each pass colour) and each set comes with a free addtional notice saying one fo the following: 'Dire Straits - Dressing Room', 'Dire Straits - Tune-Up Room' or 'Dire Straits - Production Office'.

The next newsletter is officially due at the end of May, but I'm going to be on holiday then (at last! hooray!) so I will be doing it during the first half of June instead. By that time, hopefully you will all have got the live album/video and will be able to let me know what you think of them!

PS. I never usually plug other bands in this newsletter but today I'm making an exception. Went to see a young band last week called TRF (The Royal Family) who do an entire set of Queen covers. I went with all the usual reservations you know the sort of thing: Nobody else can do justice to the songs, must be cashing in, etc. , but I have to say they were brilliant. If you liked Queen (and I know a lot of you did) and miss their live shows, or if you never saw them yet, like the music, you should try and catch this band. They really do it to perfection (quite uncanny) and done with the greatest respect for the original group. As I say, copyacts are not the sort of thing I would normally consider going to, and I'm sure a lot of you would say the same, but if you can get over that prejudice, this lot were simply too good at what they did to be faulted.
