Hola a todo el mundo,

Bien, ya he vuelto de mis vacaciones en España y me siento más viva –es increíble lo que puede hacer un poco de sol! Por supuesto, hay también desventajas cuando te vas de vacaciones sobre todo cuando tu eres la única persona haciendo un trabajo determinado (como me pasa a mi con el Servicio de Información) porque no hay nadie que haga tu trabajo mientras que estás fuera! He vuelto a una caja gigante de correo, con lo que si estáis esperando a que os conteste algo, tardaré un mes en mirarlo todo.

Bastantes cartas que he abierto hasta ahora contenían comentarios del disco y video “On the night”, con lo que las estoy separando para dárselas al grupo. La mayoría de vosotros parecéis bastante contentos, y el album ha ido bastante bien hasta ahora (para ser un directo) y hemos alcanzado ventas de 1,5 millones. Para aquellos de vosotros que estéis intersados en estas cosas, bajo he puesto una lista de las posiciones alcanzadas en los diferentes países (muchos países no han mandado cifras todavía). La lista es actual en el momento en que la escribo:

Australia 5, Austria 9, Bélgica 2, Canadá 37, Dinamarca 7, Francia 1, Finlandia 9, Irlanda 22, Italia 2, Japón 22, Alemania 7, Holanda 2, Noruega 3, Portugal 5, España 1, Suecia 29, Suiza 11. “Encores” con cuatro canciones tampoco lo ha hecho mal del todo y es número 1 en Francia y en España y en ambos países la banda tiene un doble número 1. En mis vacaciones, no he dejado de escuchar Your Latest Trick en bares y clubs –no ha habido forma de escapar!

Algunas de las cartas que he abierto contienen algunas quejas del album principalmente preguntando por que no han sido incluidas determinadas canciones. Por supuesto, todo el mundo tiene sus canciones favoritas pero a no ser que la banda hiciese un concierto que durase toda la noche y tocase todas las canciones que han grabado y editar todo el lote, es imposible complacer a todo el mundo… A mi personalmente me hubiese encantado escuchar (I think I) love you too much y Setting me up el el album, pero yo no tomo esas decisiones. Muchos de vosotros habéis preguntado porque el Sultans no fue incluido y la única explicación que os puedo dar es… porque la banda no lo escogió!

CONCIERTO DE DIRE STRAITS

Mark va a tocar en un concierto con sus amigos Brendan Broker y Steve Phillips en el Town & Country, Cookridge Street, Leeds el 3 de Julio, Sábado. No estamos vendiendo entradas aquí porque en realidad es el concierto de Brendan, pero deberíais llamar al locar si quereis: (0532)540540. Las entradas valen 8,50 libras. Las puertas abren a las 07:00pm y hay un grupo telonero llamado “The Silver Donkey Band” y unos humoristas locales también. Ya me han dicho que no es un secreto ya en Leeds con lo que espero que todavía queden entradas si llamáis. Veis? No se puede tener a MK separado mucho tiempo del escenario!

LA GUERRA DE PRECIOS DEL CD

Los fans que viven en el Reino Unido probablemente notaron que el manager del grupo Ed Bicknell ha tenido tanta promoción casi como el grupo hace un par de semanas, en realidad, casi se ha convertido en una celebridad! Para aquellos que se lo han perdido, aquí hay una breve hipnosis sobre lo que trataba:

El precio de los cds en este país que está por las 14 libras, lo consideramos demasiado alto. Muchas tiendas, especialmente las grandes cadenas de tiendas como Our Price, Virgen, HMV, Toser etc están intentando que el precio sea más asequible para el público discutiendo fuertemente, y esto significa que están ofreciendo los cds casi al mismo precio que ellos lo compran de las compañías de discos, con lo que finalmente se les queda beneficio casi cero.

Ed y otros managers de otros actos están cuestionando toda la estructura de precios de los CDs, en otras palabras, por que las compañías de discos están cargando tanto por ellos y en qué se emplea este dinero.

Hay una comité selecto de investigación, que escuchó las evidencias de todos los managers, a la Asociación de Consumidores, a todas las tiendas principales y la Industria Fonográfica Británica. El comité recomendó que el precio debía ser recortado en dos libras esterlinas por CC y también que toda la industria del disco tendría que ser investigada por la Comisión de Fusiones y Monopolios para ver si es operar contra los intereses públicos. Que las compañías de discos tomen se tomen esto en serio o no está todavía por ver y en cualquier caso no toda la reducción de precio será algo que el consumidor final vea ya que las tiendas querrán volver a su beneficio normal, pero vivimos en la esperanza…

MARK KNOPFLER –DOCTORADO EN MUSICA

A principios de Mayo, a Mark se le otorgó el Grado Honorario de Música por la Universidad de Newcastle, y aquí está la foto… Todavía pienso que la cinta en la cabeza le sienta mejor!

PROMOCION HECHA Y POR HACER

Mark hizo un poquito de promoción para cuando salió el album On the Night incluyendo lo siguiente en el Reino Unido: Revista Rock Compact Disc, Johny Walter Radio 1, y Robin Ross Independent Local Radio. También hizo una apariencia pequeña en Tomorrow´s World, enseñando una nueva guitarra LED. Fuera del Reino Unido las principales entrevistas fueron Le Soir (Bélgica), Clarín (Argentina), Telerama (Francia), y una entrevista para Alemania que fue para revista/radio/TV, además Audio Magazine, Fachblatt, Cosmoplitan, Radio SFB, Radio Bremen, Radio NDR, Traugott (Vox TV), Airplay y Showplay (Premiere TV) y Bravo TV (RTL2).

Incluso nos sorprendió a todos cuando accedió a levantarse a las 4 de la mañana hace un par de semanas para aparecer en Rockline para Global Satellite Network en los Estados Unidos. Este programa sale en directo, con lo que la diferencia horaria hizo que tuviese que estar en el estudio en el Reino Unido a esas horas intempestivas de la mañana para cualquier bicho viviente (en realidad, no creo que se levantase pronto, creo que ni siquiera se fue a la cama!)

Aún quedan un par pendientes. Es posible que haga Globo TV para Brasil y 60 Minutes para Australia.

Uno de los periódicos del Reino Unido, The Daily Mail, junto con Radio 1, hizo un sondeo sobre cuales eran los 100 mejores albunes de todos los tiempos. Brothers in Arms salió el 8 (ganaron 1/Stars –Simply Red, 2/Sgt. Pepper –Beatles, 3/The Joshua Tree –U2, 4/Bat out of hell –Meatloaf 5/Dark side of the moon –Pink Floyd, 6/Out of time –REM, 7/Thriller –Michael Jackson. Como Out of Hell llegó allí, es algo que no me explico todavía, quiero decir, habéis escuchado el disco? Y respecto a REM, pensé que el empezar de Spitting Images con Shiny Happy People (al cual titularon Whiny Crappy People) se sumó a ello perfectamente… Pero bueno, esa es solo mi opinión.

ARTICULOS DE LA PROMOCION DEL ON THE NIGHT

Tenemos en la oficina diferentes “cartones” de las tiendas de cuando hicieron la promoción, y abultan demasiado para mandarlos. Si alguien va a estar en la zona y quiere venir y recogerlos sois bienvenidos. Simplemente llamarme antes y escribiré vuestro nombre en la caja y estará reservado ahí hasta que lo recojais.

OTROS MIEMBROS DE LA BANDA

No voy a poner nada de lo que están haciendo ya que quiero mandar esta carta lo antes posible, y no he conseguido localizarlos a todos después de mis vacaciones. Una vez más estarán incluidos en la exposición de los Thunderbirds en el Reino Unido esta vez en Blackpool. PASES DE SEGURIDAD BACKSTAGE/EDICIONES LIMITADAS GUITARRA

La oferta de “pases” es una de las de más éxito que hemos hecho hasta ahora y me temo que lo hemos dado todo. Referente a los grabados de la guitarra, un 92% de los miembros del dsis quiso uno.
Espero que los que lo recibisteis os gustara y siento mucho que no todo el mundo pudiese conseguir uno.

SUBASTA MEMORABILIA

En Marzo de este año, envié los cheques a Terrence Higgins Trust y la Fundación Elton John contra el sida –por valor de 2.151,75 libras esterlinas cada uno de ellos. Este fue el dinero conseguido en nuestra subasta de primavera –así que muchas gracias a todos vosotros que pujasteis por los diferentes artículos.

Os he puesto una copia de la carta que recibí del la oficina de Elton, la cual pensé que os gustaría leer.

ALGUNOS INTERESANTES ARTICULOS PARA VOSOTROS

Arriba encontraréis una bonita viñeta hecha por el miembro del DSIS Jose Luis de Vigo, España. En realidad Jose, está bastante tranquilo ahora, pero durante la gira –si, así es como era! Gracias!

Este comentario apareció en The Times. Ya que Carl Leighton Pope no promociona los conciertos de Dire Straits, no sé porque utiliza el nombre de Mark como ejemplo, pero nos hizo reir bastante...

“El promotor de conciertos Carl Leighton-Pope explica por que un grupo de bailarines puede conseguir una reserva más fiable que un artista de rock importante. “si tengo problemas con alguno de ellos, pues simplemente lo mando a casa y consigo a otro. No puedo hacer lo mismo con Mark Knopfler”

Y esto es un trocito de una carta enviada por un miembro del DSIS el cuál pujó por un artículo y lo consiguió. (no diré el nombre para no dejarlo en evidencia!)

Para aquellos de vosotros que no estéis familiarizados con estas cosas, contra el Sida es The Terrence Higgins, Alex Higgins es un jugador de billar con un talento brillante, pero que tiene algunos problemillas con el alcohol!! Cuando decidimos a quien donar el dinero que recibimos, no creo que Alex hubiese sido una buena causa!!

MARK/AARON NEVILLE/HANK MARVIN/DOCUMENTAL EN TV

Mark ha aparecido recientemente en una canción titulada Don´t Fall Apart On Me tonight para el album siguiente de Aaron Neville. También está a punto de grabar una versión de la canción de the Shadows Nivram con Hank Marvin, y el beneficio iría a la Nordoff Robbins Music Therapy. Esta sesión saldrá en un documental en Granada TV en el cual Mark y Hank aparecerán. Saldrá en la TV británica en el otoño (y probablemente en otros países después) para celebrar los 40 Años de la Fender Strat.

Ok, eso es todo por ahora. Siento que hayan tan poquitas noticias, pero creo que las cosas estarán muy tranquilas hasta por lo menos fin de año.

Dear everyone,
Well, I'm back from my hols in Spain and I'm feeling a lot more lively - it's amazing what a bit of sunshine can do! Of course, there are distinct disadvantages of going on holiday when you are the sole person doing a particular job (as with me and the Info Service) because there's nobody to do your work while you're away! I've come back to an enormous box of mail, so if you're waiting for a reply to anything, don't hold your breath, it will take me about a month to get through it all.
Quite a number of the letters I've opened so far have contained comments on the On The Night live album and video, so I'm keeping them to pass on to the band. Most of you seem to be very pleased with them, and the album's done pretty well so far for a live album, with world-wide sales of 1.5 million. For those of you who are interested in these things, below is a list of highest chart position reached in various countries (many countries haven't sent figures in yet). This list is correct at time of typing:
Australia No. 5, Austria No. 9, Belgium No. 2, Canada No. 37, Denmark No. 7, France No. 1, Finland No. 9, Ireland No. 22, Italy No. 2, Japan No. 22, Germany No. 7, Holland No. 2, Norway No. 3, Portugal No. 5, Spain No. 1, Sweden No. 29, Switzerland No. 11. The Encores four-track has also done pretty well, and is No. 1 in France and Spain so in those two countries the band have a double No. 1. On my holiday, I kept hearing Your Latest Trick in bars and clubs - no escape from it!
Some of the letters I've opened have contained a few moans about the album mainly asking why certain tracks weren't included. Of course everyone has their favourite track, but basically unless the band were to do an all-night-concert and play every song they've ever recorded, and release the whole lot, it's impossible to please everybody... I would personally have liked to hear [I Think I] Love You Too Much and Setting Me Up on the album, but I don't make these decisions. A lot of you have asked why Sultans [Of Swing] wasn't included, and the only explanation I can give you is... it wasn't chosen by the band!

DS GIG
Mark is playing a gig with fellow Hillbillies Brendan Croker and Steve Phillips at The Town & Country, Cookridge Street, Leeds, on Saturday 3rd July. We are not selling tickets from here because it's really Brendan's gig, but you should call the venue if you want to go (0532) 540540. Tickets are £8.50. Doors open 7.00pm, and there's a support group called The Silver Donkey Band, and a local comedian as compere. I'm told that word has now got out in Leeds and so it's no longer a well-kept secret, so I just hope there are some tickets left when you call. See, can't keep MK off a stage for long!.

THE CD PRICE WAR
Fans living in the UK probably noticed that the group's manager Ed Bicknell was getting almost as much press/radio/TV coverage as the group a few weeks ago in fact he's become quite a celebrity! For those of you who missed it, here's a brief synopsis of what it was all about.
The issue is the price of CDs in this country, which at around £14.00, we consider to be too high. Many shops, notably the large 'chains' of stores such as Our Price, Virgin, HMV, Tower etc., are trying to make them more affordable to the public by discounting them heavily, and this means that they are often retailing them for almost the same price as they buy them wholesale from the record companies, thus reducing their own profit margins to practically nothing.
Ed and several other managers of major acts are questioning the whole pricing structure of CDs in other words why the record companies are charging so much for them and how this money is being accounted for.
There was a House Of Commons Select Committee investigation, who heard evidence from all sides managers, the Consumers Association, all the major retailers and the British Phonographic Industry. The House Of Commons Committee recommended that the price be cut by £2.00 per CD, and also that the whole record industry be investigated by the Mergers and Monopolies Commission to see if it is operating against the public interest as a 'cartel'. Whether the record companies will take much notice of this is yet to be seen, and in any case not all of the reduction would be passed on to the punter in the street since the retailers will want to reintroduce their normal profit margin again, but we live in hope...
MARK KNOPFLER - DOCTOR OF MUSIC
At the beginning of May, Mark was awarded an Honorary Music Degree by Newcastle University, and here's the picture... I still think the headband looks better!

PRESS DONE AND TO BE DONE
Mark did a limited amount of promotion around the release of the On The Night album including the following in the UK: Rock Compact Disc magazine, Johnny Walker Radio 1, and Robin Ross Independent Local Radio syndication. He also made a brief appearance on Tomorrow's World demonstrating a new LED guitar. Overseas, the main interviews were Le Soir (Belgium), Clarin (Argentina), Telerama (France), and a syndicated interview for Germany, which was for press/radio/TV, including Audio Magazine, Fachblatt, Cosmopolitan, Radio SFB, Radio Bremen, Radio NDR, Traugott (Vox TV), Airplay and Showplay (Premiere TV), and Bravo TV (RTL2).
He also stunned us all by agreeing to get up at 4 AM a couple of weeks back to appear on Rockline for Global Satellite Network in the USA. This programme goes out live, so the time difference meant he had to be in the UK studio at that unearthly hour for the live linkup (actually I don't think he got up early, I don't think he went to bed at all!).
There are a couple of others still outstanding he may be doing Globo TV for Brazil and 60 Minutes for Australia.
One of the UK papers, The Daily Mail, in conjunction with Radio 1, recently polled readers and listeners for their all-time Top 100 albums. I'm not putting anything in this newsletter about what they are doing, since I want to get it sent out as soon as possible, and I haven't managed to catch up with them all yet after my holiday. This little quote appeared in The Times. Since Carl Leighton Pope doesn't promote Dire Straits shows, I don't know why he used Mark as an example, but it gave us a good laugh anyway..
And this is part of a letter send in by a DSIS member who successfully bid for an item in the auction (I won't embarrass him by naming him!).

For those of you not familiar with these things, the Aids charity is The Terrence Higgins Trust.Alex Higgins is a snooker player who of brilliant talent, but who has a bit of a problem with the demon alcohol!!! When deciding where to donate the charity money I receive, I'm not sure that Alex would be deemed a particularly worthwhile cause!!!
MARK/AARON NEVILLE/HANK MARVIN/TV DOCUMENTARY
Mark recently played on a track entitled Don't Fall Apart On Me Tonight for Aaron Neville's forthcoming album. He is also just about to record a version of the Shadows song Nivram with Hank Marvin, with proceeds to go to Nordoff Robbins Music Therapy. This latter session came about through a Granada TV documentary, in which both Mark and Hank are to appear. It is due to be screened on the UK TV in the autumn (and probably other countries later) to celebrate Forty Years Of The Fender Strat.
