Hola a todo el mundo,
Sé que una mayoría de vosotros no podréis ir, pero si hay una probabilidad
de que estéis en el Reino Unido en Junio, aquí tenéis buenas noticias:
Dire Straits han decidido dar dos conciertos en el Hammersmith Odeon,
Londres, justo antes del gran concierto de Nelson Mandela en Wembley
Stadium!
Estos dos conciertos extras tendrán lugar el miércoles 8 de Junio y el
Jueves 9 de Junio, y hemos decidido que las entradas para estos conciertos
sean sólo para miembros del Dire Straits Information Service!. Os adjunto
con esta carta dos formularios para pedir las entradas (uno para cada
noche). Podéis, por supuesto, ir a las dos noches o sólo a una, y pedir
también todas las entradas que queráis para vuestros amigos. Como estos
conciertos son relativamente pronto, es posible que prefiráis pedir las
entradas por teléfono, entonces las tendría preparadas para vosotros aquí
y podríais recogerlas cuando lleguéis a Londres. Si queréis hacer esto,
por favor, llamadme por teléfono LONDRES (01) 723 5640 y simplemente
preguntar por Liz.
Las entradas sólo van a costar 10.00 libras cada una, incluidos los
impuestos y el dinero irá a parar para ayudar a los costes del concierto
de Wembley, para poder así dar más dinero a la beneficencia (ver la lista
en mi carta de Marzo).
En el Hammersmith, la banda tocará virtualmente el mismo set que en
Wembley Stadium y no su set normal de dos horas y media. Estarán
probablemente en el escenario durante una hora y una hora y cuarto. Habrá
uno o posiblemente dos teloneros en el Hammersmith: Brandan Crocker & the
5 o´clock Shadows y quizás Paul Brady. (Brendan, quizás recordaréis, que
es el amigo de Mark con quien apareció el pasado otoño en un pequeño club
en Londres).
En este momento, no estamos seguros de a que hora son los conciertos en
Hammersmith, pero os diría que las puertas se abrirán a las 6:00 pm.
Si queréis ir a los conciertos, por favor, llamadme tan pronto como
recibáis esta carta. Si tenéis amigos en Inglaterra y creéis que ellos
querrían ir, deberían contactarme directamente. (Los miembros del Dire
Straits Information Service en el Reino Unido ya están informados sobre
estos conciertos).
Algunos puntos a destacar sobre estos conciertos:
1.- Cámaras: refiriéndonos a la “política normal de los conciertos”, Dire
Straits y Damange Management NO TIENE NINGUNA OBJECIÓN NI NADA PARECIDO a
que la gente traiga cámaras y sois bienvenidos a hacer tantas fotos como
queráis. Daremos instrucciones a la gente de seguridad en el local al
respecto.
2.- sobre si a Dire Straits y Damage Management no les importa si os
quedáis sentados en vuestro sitio u os levantáis y bailáis delante del
todo, no depende de nosotros, sino de la gente de seguridad del
Hammersmith. Esperamos que estén bastante relajados al respecto!.
3.- Vamos a hacer unas camisetas especiales que se venderán ambas noches
–lo que se saque de las ventas irá también a la beneficencia. Creo que el
precio será unas 10 libras cada camiseta y las camisetas que sobres, las
venderemos por correo para el resto de los miembros del DSIS que no
pudieron ir a los conciertos. De hecho, todos los fans que no sean del
Reino Unido podrán pedirlas primero. Pondré más detalles en mi próxima
carta.
NOTICIAS SOBRE EL CONCIERTO DE NELSON MANDELA –WEMBLEY STADIUM, LONDRES –
11 JUNIO
Mientras que os escribo esto, estos son las actuaciones del concierto:
Dire Straits, Simple Minds, George Michael, Whitney Houston, The
Eurythmics, UB40 con Chrissie Hynde, Hugh Masakela y Miriam Makeba, una
banda de soul hecha por Freddie Jackson/Natalie Cole/ Roberta Flack/ The
Pointer Sisters/ Sade, Sly and Robbie, Maxi Priest, Derek B, Paul Young,
Midge Ure y Phil Collins más invitados.
Esta lista puede cambiar un poco de aquí hasta la fecha del concierto!
Aparentemente los BeeGees van a hacer los coros para alguien, pero nadie
parece saber todavía quien…
Entre las actuaciones, habrán varios invitados que irán presentando
incluyendo Michael Caine, Whoopi Goldberg y Billy Connolly (que será quien
presente a los Dire Straits). La cantante de ópera Jessye Norman cantará
el final (unos cinco minutos), y Dire Straits estarán justo antes que
ella. Probablemente saldrán al escenario entre las 8 y las 8:30. Si ya
habéis pedido las entradas para este concierto, las deberíais recibir esta
semana (algunos de vosotros ya las habéis recibido).
De momento, no tengo una lista completa de todos los países donde se
retransmitirá el concierto por televisión –os pongo la lista más reciente
que tengo, pero más países se añaden cada día. En Sudáfrica, no es
necesario decir, que NO se va a retransmitir por la televisión!!.
UK: retransmiten las 10 horas en directo por la BBC2 (a la vez que en
Radio 1)
Alemania: 10 horas en directo
Francia: 10 horas en directo
España: 10 horas en directo
Suiza: 10 horas en directo
Italia: 10 horas en directo en “Video Music” y 1 hora y media en directo
en la RAI
Holanda: 6 – 10 horas en directo
Suecia: 4 horas en directo
Canada: 10 horas en directo
USA: 6 horas en directo (FOX)
Australia: 10 horas en directo (imagino que en mitad de la noche para
aquellos que estéis por allí abajo, al menos que lo pongan con retraso!!)
Un video editado de lo mejor del concierto se pondrá a la venta en todo el
mundo más tarde.
AHORA LAS NOTICIAS DE LA BANDA: como Jack Sonni y su nueva mujer Maria,
están esperando mellizos y esperan que sea para un poquito después de los
conciertos, con lo que desgraciadamente, Jack piensa que no puede venir a
Londres –se quedará con su mujer en Los Angeles, por si acaso los bebés se
adelantan!
Y AHORA LAS BUENAS NOTICIAS: esto significa que Dire Straits llevarán un
artista invitado durante los conciertos como guitarrista (con quien
estarán ensayando en Londres durante una semana a finales de
Mayo/principios de Junio). Este invitado es muy conocido por todos
vosotros. Es Eric Clapton!!!
El 5 y 6 de Junio, Mark y Alan dejarán los ensayos pronto para tocar con
la banda de Eric Clapton en el concierto de Princes Trust de este año en
el Royal Albert Hall de Londres, pero nosotros no vendemos las entradas
para este concierto (ya tengo bastantes tickets durante un tiempo!). Otras
actuaciones en el concierto de Princes Trust son: T´Pau, Wet Wet Wet, The
Four Tops, Phil Collins and Midge Ure, y Rick Astley (con el cual John ha
sido muy grosero en su cuestionario –ver más abajo en esta carta).
OTRAS NOTICIAS
El album en solitario de John “Glass” ya ha salido a la venta
(prácticamente en todos los países entre el 9 y el 16 de Mayo). También se
editó un single en casi todos los sitios la misma fecha, la versión de 7”
es “I want to see the moon con una canción que no está en el album llamada
“Words”. La versión de 12” tiene una canción adicional “The World is made
of glass”, y el cd single, el cual sólo se puede conseguir en determinados
países, tiene una cuarta canción “Papermen”. John está en estos momentos
haciendo un tour promocional en el Reino Unido, Austria, Bélgica, Francia,
Italia y Suiza. Con lo que si vivís en estas ciudades, es posible que lo
oigáis en la radio o leáis algo de él en los periódicos. Después de esto,
el volverá a Londres para los ensayos y los conciertos, y después del 11
de Junio seguirá con su promoción en España y Portugal. Estamos intentando
meter Escandinavia, Alemania y Grecia en algún lugar también… Chris White
puede estar acompañando a John en países donde tienen un programa de
televisión (no sé todavía cuales serán) ya que hay bastante saxo en el
single.
El propio Chris acaba de volver de Italia, donde ha estado de gira con
Pino Danelli (quizás recordaréis que hizo lo mismo el año pasado). También
ha estado escribiendo algunas canciones, e inmediatamente después del
concierto de Wembley, va a intentar hacer una demo y conseguir un contrato
con una discográfica, y entonces, llevar la banda a la carretera para
algunos conciertos pequeños. Ya os haré saber como va progresando.
Mark y Guy acaban de terminar el trabajo para el album de Randy Newman en
Los Angeles. Originariamente, sólo iban a hacer cuatro de las canciones,
pero al final, se quedaron e hicieron siete. El album no tiene título
todavía ya que no tiene fecha para que salga al mercado aún. No he oído
ninguna de las canciones todavía –todo lo que sé es lo que Mark me dijo al
teléfono, que es: “suenan geniales!”. Otras canciones en el album han sido
producidas por Jeff Lynne (ex ELO) y Tommy Lipuma. Además de Mark y Guy,
otros músicos son Lee Sklaar en el bajo y Carlos Vego en la batería (ambos
de la banda de James Taylor) y por supuesto, Randy Newman al piano.
Terry me dice que acaba de comprar un nuevo set de baterías (que esperemos
pueda tocarla en los conciertos de Junio!!!). Se supone que iba a hacer un
documental sobre si mismo, pero no ha empezado todavía.
Como seguramente sabréis si visteis la entrega de los Oscars en televisión
(aburrido, no?) el tema de Willy deVille de “La Princesa Prometida” no
ganó ninguno; no sólo eso, sino que la mayoría de los países emitieron “lo
mejor editado” solamente, y la nominación para esta categoría en
particular no se emitió para nada ni tampoco ninguna de las actuaciones.
De cualquier modo, la entrega de Oscars se emitió entero en todos los
Estados Unidos (e incluso algunos países más) y según mis espías, Willy
estaba muy nervios, pero cantó bien…
Camisetas: sólo nos quedan pequeñas y medianas (no hay grandes ni extra
grandes). Si queréis una, por favor, mandad la solicitud antes de finales
de Julio ya que las que me queden, las daré para la beneficencia.
La próxima carta será a finales de Agosto (bastante tiempo, pero es porque
son las vacaciones de verano y me voy a tomar un descanso después de los
conciertos, porque ahora mismo estoy trabajando siete días a la semana!).
En la carta de Agosto, os contestaré a muchas de vuestras preguntas que me
habéis estado enviando, además habrá una nueva oferta de foto. He estado
mirando un montón de fotos que tenemos aquí, para seleccionar las mejores.
También habrá una competición (una fácil) en esa carta con muchos buenos
premios. Seguro que ahora mismo os parece que los fans del Reino Unido,
tienen lo mejor ahora mismo, y que no hay muchas buenas noticias para los
fans del extranjero, con lo que voy a hacer una competición “especial para
el extranjero”, con lo que muchos de vosotros tendréis la oportunidad de
conseguir un premio…

JOHN ILLSLEY
1.- Fue el bajo el primer instrumento que aprendiste a tocar, y, tocas
algún otro instrumento?
No, la guitarra fue el primer instrumento pero para poder tocar con la
primera banda que estuve, tuve que arrancar a mi guitarra las dos cuerdas
de arriba y tocar la guitarra como un bajo! Toco la guitarra y el piano.
2.- Cuántos años tenías cuando empezaste a tocar, y, decidiste en ese
momento que querías dedicarte a la música, o fue después de eso?
Tenía 14 años cuando empecé –pero no fue hasta los 23 años cuando supe que
quería dedicarme a esto.
3.- qué hiciste cuando dejaste el colegio y antes de que empezase Dire
Straits?
Estudié durante 3 años en la Universidad de Londres y trabajé en………………
durante 3 años. Abrí una tienda de discos en Kentish Town “Honkey Tonk
Records” –un completo desastre!
4.- hay algo especial que te gustaría haber hecho pero no has hecho
todavía?
Tocar los instrumentos que toco bien y escribir una canción que la gente
todavía recordase dentro de 30 ó 40 años.
5.- Cuáles son tus principales influencias musicales y cual es el artista
que más escuchas cuando estás en casa?
Música rock y blues, buenos cantautores, algo de música clásica. Escucho
una gran variedad de música pero tiendo hacia los cantautores y los
guitarristas.
6.-Consigues alguna vez ir a ver algún concierto, y si es así, hay alguno
que hayas ido recientemente que te haya impresionado?
Algunas veces,
*parece ser que nadie ha impresionado a John ya que ni siquiera terminó la

7.- Cuál es tu opinión sobre el estado general de las listas británicas
ahora mismo?
Bastante horrible, muy poco sentimiento en la música y la radio muy
limitada.
8.- hay alguna posibilidad de que hagas algún concierto en solitario en un
futuro, tocando material que sea sólo tuyo?
Depende del tiempo y de si Dire Straits vamos a estar muy ocupados este
año –pero nunca se sabe.
9.- qué concierto de los Dire Straits ha sido el que más te ha
impresionado y por qué?
Live Aid –no desde un punto de vista musical, sino porque fue un evento
musical increíble.
10.-Tienes todavía contacto –y ves –a los viejos amigos que te conocían
antes de hacerte famoso, y tienes la sensación de que hay gente que pueda
estar celoso de ti?
Si, tengo contacto con viejos amigos. Mis amigos no están celosos de mi;
si lo estuvieran, no serían amigos.
11.- piensas que ser famoso y tener dinero te ha cambiado, y si es así,
como?
Te da la libertad de expresarte tu mismo, a tu manera y en realidad hacer
lo que quieras en tu vida.
12.- ahora que tu matrimonio se ha roto, todavía ves a tu hijo
regularmente? Si él dijese que quiere ser un músico, le animarías o
intentarías apartarlo de esto?
Si, veo a mi hijo regularmente. Le animaría a que hiciese lo que quiere
hacer con una razón, con lo que pienso que la música está bien.
13.- cuáles son tus hobbies? Si no hubieses hecho tu album en solitario en
los últimos diez meses mientras que Mark estaba ocupado, como hubieses
pasado este tiempo sin nada que hacer?
Señor! Leyendo, escribiendo; yo creo que nunca tengo tiempo sin nada que
hacer! Da igual que Mark esté ocupado o no!!
14.- qué piensas que estarás haciendo dentro de 10 años?
Probablemente volar a Australia en menos de 3 horas
15.- que consideras que es lo peor que hay en este mundo?
Rick Astley!! No, en serio –probablemente muchas cosas por mencionar –pero
la avaricia tiene que estar bien alto en la lista. El abuso de drogas un

Dear everyone,
I know the vast majority of you will be unable to attend, but if you are
likely to be in the UK in June, here´s some good news for you: Dire
Straits have decided to play two concerts at Hammersmith Odeon, London,
just before the big Nelson Mandela concert at Wembley Stadium!
These two extra shows will be on Wednesday 8th June and Thursday 9th June,
and we have decided that tickets for these should be available to members
of Dire Straits Information Service ONLY!! You will find enclosed with
this newsletter two ticket booking forms (one for each night). You can, of
course, attend either night, or both nights, and order as many tickets as
you like for yourself and for friends. As these shows are very soon, you
may prefer to order your tickets by telephone, then I will keep them here
for you and you can collect them when you arrive in London. If you want to
do this, please telephone LONDON (01) 723 5640 and just ask for Liz.
Tickets are just 10.00 pounds each inclusive of tax, and the money will go
towards the costs of putting on the Wembley show, so we can give more
money to the charities (see list in my March newsletter).
At Hammersmith, the band will play virtually the same set as at Wembley
Stadium i.e. not their usual 2 ½ hour set. They will probably be on stage
for between one hour and on and a quarter hours. There will be one or
possibly two support-acts at Hammersmith: Brendan Crocker & The 5 o´clock
Shadows, and maybe Paul Brady. (Brendan, you may recall, is Mark´s mate,
with whom Mark appeared last autumn at a small club in London).
At this stage we´re not quite sure what time the shows at Hammersmith will
start, but I would think doors will open at about 6.00 pm.
If you DO want to attend, please phone me as soon as you get this letter.
If you have friends in England and think they would like to attend, they
should contact me direct. (Dire Straits Information Service members in the
UK already know about these shows).
Some points to note about the concerts:
1.- Cameras: regardless of what “usual concert policy” may be, Dire
Straits and Damage Management have NO OBJECTION WHATSOEVER to people
bringing cameras, and you are welcome to take may photos as you like. We
will be instructing the security staff at the hall accordingly.
2.-Whereas Dire Straits and Damage Management don´t mind whether you stay
by you seat or get up and dance about at the front, it is not actually up
to us, but to security staff at Hammersmith. We´re hoping they will be
fairly relaxed about it!
3.- We will be doing a special T-shirt which will be on sale both nights –proceeds
from sales will also be going to charity. I think the price will be ABOUT
10.00 pounds per shirt, and any that are left over, I will sell by mail-order
from here to Info. Service members who were not able to be at the concerts.
Therefore, all overseas fans will have first choice. I will put details in
the next newsletter.
NEWS ABOUT THE NELSON MANDELA CONCERT –WEMBLEY STADIUM, LONDON -JUNE 11TH
At time of typing, it looks like the following acts will be on:
Dire Straits, Simple Minds, George Michael, Whitney Houston, The
Eurythmics, UB40 with Chrissie Hynde, Hugh Masakela and Miriam Makeba, a
soul band consisting of Freddie Jackson/Natalie Cole/ Roberta Flack/ The
Pointer Sisters/ Sade, Sly and Robbie, Maxi Priest, Derek B, Paul Young,
Midge Ure and Phil Collins plus guests. This list may change slightly
between now and the date of the concert though! Apparently, the BeeGees
are doing backing vocals for someone, but nobody seems to know who yet…
In between the acts, there will be various guest-presenters including
Michael Caine, Whoopi Goldberg and Billy Connolly (who will introduce Dire
Straits). Opera singer Jessye Norman will sing the finale (about five
minutes long), and Dire Straits are on just before that. They will
probably go on stage at about 8.00 – 8:30pm. If you ordered tickets for
this show, you should be getting them this week (some of you will already
have received them).
At present, I don´t have a full list of countries where the show is being
screened on TV –the following one is the most recent list I have been able
to get, but more countries are being added every day. South Africa,
needless to say, is NOT showing the concert on television!!!

A video cassette of edited highlights from the show will be available
worldwide at a later date.
NOW FOR THE BAND NEWS: Because Jack Sonni and his new wife Maria are
expecting their twins to arrive very shortly after the concerts,
unfortunately Jack feels he cannot come over to London –he feels he must
stay with his wife in Los Angeles in case the babies arrive early!
AND NOW FOR THE GOOD NEWS: this means that Dire Straits will be using a
guest guitar at all three concerts (with whom they will be rehearsing in
London for a week at the end of May/beginning of June). This guest
guitarist will be well-known to all of you. It´s Eric Clapton!!!
On 5th and 6th June, Mark and Alan will be leaving rehearsals early to
play as part of Eric´s band at this year´s Princes Trust concerts at
London´s Royal Albert Hall, but we are not selling tickets for those shows
from here (I´ve had enough of tickets for a while!). other acts on at the
Princes Trust shows are: T´Pau, Wet Wet Wet, The Four Tops, Phil Collins
and Midge Ure, and Rick Astley (who John has been very rude about in his
questionnaire –see later in this letter…)
OTHER NEWS
John Illsley´s solo album “Glass” is now out (release in practically all
countries between 9th and 16th May). A single was released in most places
on the same date, and the 7th version is “I want to see the moon! b/w a
non-album track called “Words”. The 12th version has an additional track
“The World is made of glass”, and the cd single, which is only available
in certain countries, has a fourth track “Papermen”. John is currently
doing a short promotional tour of the UK, Austria, Belgium, France, Italy
and Switzerland, s oif you live on one of those countries, you may be
hearing him on the radio or reading about him in the papers. After this,
he returns to London for rehearsals and the shows, and after June 11th, he
will be doing more promotion in Spain and Portugal. We´re trying to slot
Scandinavia, Germany and Greece in somewhere too… Chris White may be
accompanying John to countries which have a TV show planned (don´t know
which ones they are yet) as there is quite a lot of sax featured on the
single.
Chris himself has recently returned from Italy, where he was touring with
Pino Danelli (you may remember he did this last year too). He has also
been writing some songs, and immediately after the Wembley concert, he is
intending to make a demo tape and try and get a record deal, and then take
the band on the road to do a few small concerts. I´ll let you know how it
is progressing.
Mark and Guy have just finished working on the Randy Newman album in Los
Angeles. Originally, they were only going to do four of the tracks, but in
the end, they stayed on and did about seven. The album has no title as yet
and no release date scheduled. I haven´t heard any of the tracks myself –all
I know is what Mark has said on the phone, which is “they sound great”!.
Other tracks on the album are being produced by Jeff Lynne (ex-ELO) and
Tommy Lipuma. Apart from Mark and Guy, the other musicians are Lee Sklaar
on bass and Carlos Vego on drums (both from James Taylor´s band), and –of
course –Randy Newman on piano.
Terry tells me he has just bought a new drumkit (which hopefully he will
be able to play by the time of the June shows!!!). he was supposed to be
making a video documentary about himself, but that still hasn’t got
started.
As you probably know if you watched the American Academy Awards on TV (Boring,
wasn´t it?!), Willy deVille´s theme song to “The Princess Bride” didn´t
win one; not only that, but most countries showed “edited highlights” only,
and the nomination for that particular category wasn´t shown at all, nor
were any of the performances. However, the OSCARS were shown in their
entirety in the USA (and I think a couple of other countries) and
according to my spies, Willy was very nervous, but sang ok…
T-shirts: we now only have small and medium sizes remaining (no large and
no extra-large). If you do want one, please send before the end of July as
after that I will be giving the few remaining ones to charities.
The next newsletter will be at the end of August (quite a long gap, but
that´s because it´s summer holidays and i´m going to take a bit of a break
after the shows, because i´m working seven days a week at present! In the
August newsletter, I will answer lots of the questions you have been
sending in, plus there will be a new photo offer. I´ve been going through
the huge pile of photos we have here, to select the best ones. There will
also be a competitions (an easy one) in that newsletter with lots of great
prices. It probably seems to you that UK fans are getting all the best
news right now, and there´s not much for fans overseas to look forward to,
so I´ll be doing a special “overseas fans only” competition, so lots of
you will have the chance of getting a prize…

JOHN ILLSLEY
1.- Was the bass the first instrument you learned to play, and do you play
any other instruments?
No, the guitar was the first but in order to join my first band, I had to
take the two top strings off and play the guitar like a bass!! I play the
guitar and piano.
2.- How old were you when you started playing, and did you decide then
that you wanted to make music your career, or did you decide that at a
later date?
I was 14 when I first started –it wasn’t until I was 23 that I felt I
could make music my career.
3.- what did you do between the time you left school and the time Dire
Straits started?
I was a student for 3 years at London University and I also worked in a
----------- for three years. I opened a record shop in Kentish town
“Honkey Tonk Records” –Total disaster!
4.- Is there anything special you would like to have achieved, but haven´t
yet?
To play the instruments I play much better and to write a song people will
still sing in 30 or 40 years time.
5.- What are your main musical influences and what artist do you listen to
when you´re at home?
Rock and Blues music, good songwriters, some classical but not too
high……….
I listen to a wide range of music but a tendency towards singer/songwriter
and guitar players.
6.- do you ever get a chance to see new groups play live, and if so, is
there anyone you´ve seen recently who has really impressed you?
Sometimes,

7.- What is your opinion of the general state of the British charts at
present?
Pretty dreadful, precious little feeling in the music and very limited
radio play.
8.- Is there any chance of you doing solo shows in the future, playing
material off your two solo albums?
Depends on time and whether the Straits are going to be busy this year
–but you never know.
9.- What gig that Dire Straits have done most sticks in your mind, and for
what reason?
Live Aid –not from a musical point of view, but it was just such an event
in musical muscle.
10.- do you still keep in touch with –and see –old friends who knew you
before you were famous, and do you ever feel people are jealous of you?
Yes, I keep in touch with old friends. My friends are not jealous of me;
if they were, they wouldn´t be friends.
11.- do you think being successful and having money has changed you, and
if so, how?
Give you the freedom to express yourself in your own way and to pretty
much do what you want in life.
12.- now your marriage has broken up, do you still see your son regularly?

Yes, I see my son regularly, I would encourage him to do what he wants
with reason, so guess music is ok

Gosh! Reading, writing; I never seam to have spare time! Whether Mark is
busy or not!!
