Hola a todo el mundo,

Hace ya más de un mes desde que terminó la gira, y todavía se nota raro aquí –de alguna forma cuando la banda está de gira hay cada día alguna urgencia, y sin esto, es bastante duro seguir motivada. Aunque parezca difícil de creer, en realidad echo de menos estar demasiado ocupada para pensar. No es que tenga poco que hacer –cuando tienes más de 100 personas más unas cuantas docenas de camiones articulados llenos de cosas llegando de nuevo al Reino Unido, hay un montón de cosas por aclarar. Una vez que el equipo ha vuelto a las compañías de alquiler, y los instrumentos musicales a varios miembros de la banda, las cosas se ven un poquito más claras, pero entonces estaba toda la ropa del escenario para catalogar, más cientos de objetos que la gente ha ido cogiendo a lo largo del camino –algunos han sido comprados, otros son regalos de amigos y fans, algunas cosas son cosas que nadie recuerda de donde vienen!

LA PARTE FINAL DE LA GIRA

Los conciertos italianos fueron sin incidentes, lo cual nos sorprendió a todos. Esta vez tuvimos un gran promotor, y el único “drama” fue en el concierto de Salerno donde tuvimos una terrible tormenta. Un rayo cayó sobre el escenario justo antes de que la banda saliese y todas las cadenas del panel principal (96 en total) menos 9 dejaron de funcionar. La banda salió con una hora de retraso y lo hizo lo mejor que pudo con las únicas cadenas que funcionaban, aunque no hubo cadena para el teclado durante la mayoría del concierto. De cualquier modo, el equipo dañado es algo con lo que podemos salir adelante –damos gracias que el rayo no cayó un poco después cuando la banda ya estaba en el escenario… Fui a Roma, la cual ganó el premio a la audiencia más escandalosa de toda la gira. Muchos de nosotros conseguimos hacer un poco de visita turística allí –después de todo, no podrías ir a Roma y no ver el Vaticano ni el Coliseo, verdad?

Decidimos tener una gran fiesta para celebrar el final de la gira en Barcelona, porque aunque no fue la ciudad del último concierto, era mucho más fácil para la gente acercarse a Barcelona en vez de a Zaragoza. Originariamente iba a ser sólo para la banda, equipo y oficina, pero fue como una bola de nieve, y terminamos invitando a todos los promotores que habían trabajado en la gira, más familia, amigos, periodistas, gente de la compañía de discos etc. Me pareció pasar las dos últimas semanas antes de Barcelona haciendo reservas de hotel y reservando vuelos para todo el mundo que se iba apuntando a la fiesta. La fiesta fue en el local (Palau Sant Jordi), empezó a la 1 de la mañana. Se consumieron grandes cantidades de paella y bebida! Lo mejor de la noche fue cuando un grupo de Chefs españoles llegaron con una gigante tarta “fin de la gira” la cual era de verdad una obra de arte. Arriba del todo había una copia del escenario, completa con las luces y el equipo, y modelos de mazapán de los miembros de la banda. Alrededor de la tarta habían copias exactas de las portadas de los diferentes albums de la banda en hielo, fotos en mazapán de todo el personal etc. Y una lista de todos los conciertos de la gira “on every Street” hecha en hielo. Conseguí un par de portadas en mazapán y mi foto, y pensé en dárselo a los miembros de DSIS pero al final, lo di a los fans que habían estado esperando en la puerta del hotel Le Meridien ya que, no creo que hubiesen sobrevivido el viaje de vuelta al Reino Unido.

No fui a los conciertos de Madrid (me tomé un par de días libres, alquilé un coche y me fui a la tranquila Andorra para recuperarme de la fiesta) pero hice el recorrido hasta Zaragoza para ver en último concierto. Lluvias torrenciales, truenos y relámpagos, tuvimos de todo esa noche en Zaragoza –creo que la audiencia merecería una medalla colectiva por la resistencia y aguante. Con suerte, dejó de llover cuando DS salió al escenario y fue un concierto maravilloso, animado por algunas bromas que el equipop gastó a la banda , como suele ser habitual en el último concierto… Fue por supuesto una ocasión bastante triste; la cena antes del concierto fue excepcionalmente silenciosa, normalmente es una casa de locos, y mientras que daba vueltas en el estadio, me sentí bastante triste.

PASES SOUVENIR

Durante la última sección de la gira, conseguí recolectar unos cuantos pases más de varios conciertos. Como ya veréis cuando sigáis leyendo, tendremos una venta para beneficencia, con lo que si queréis uno, tendréis que comprarlo…

QUE ESTÁ HACIENDO TODO EL MUNDO, Y CUALES SON LOS PLANES DE FUTURO?

Esta es una pregunta que se me pregunta constantemente de momento así que aquí os cuento un poquito:

Mark y Guy –en el estudio. John –nada en particular, pero en el momento en que escribo esto, está buscando sus clubs de golf ya que los ha perdido! Chris –reconstruyendo el estudio de su casa y escribiendo nuevo material para su segundo disco en solitario. Está fuera de sí porque ha aprobado su carnet de moto (después de un curso de 5 días) y ahora está planeando comprarse una moto –si alguien piensa aventurarse en las calles del sur de Londres, por favor, llevar cuidado! Phil Palmer –ha estado trabajando en Italia con un cantante llamado Eros Ramazzotti (no, nunca he oído hablar de él, pero parece ser que es muy importante en Italia…). Volverá al Reino Unido el mes que viene y se supone que grabará un disco con Steve Ferrone, Tony Levin, Paul Carrack y Rupert Hine. Paul Franklin –trabajando en el disco de Dolly Parton y además se supone que diseñará y construirá su propia casa en Tennessee. Danny Cummings –en busca de piso en Londres. Chris Whitten –no quiere hacer otra gira durante un tiempo, quiere pasar más tiempo con su nueva mujer Jordan.

La segunda parte de la cuestión es imposible para mi contestároslo ahora. Todo el mundo se está todavía acostumbrando a estar de vuelta y nadie puede de momento pensar más lejos de un par de días. No creo que sepamos nada hasta por lo menos la primavera que viene como muy pronto.

DIRE STRAITS –THE VIDEOS

Aquí os escribo un poquito sobre como está la situación en el mundo:

Si vivís en cualquiera de las siguientes ciudades deberíais haber podido comprar vuestra copia ya, ya que se ha editado ya: Australia, Austria, Canadá, Dinamarca, Finlandia, Francia, Alemania, Holanda, Italia, Israel, Japón, Noruega, Nueva Zelanda, Portugal, Suecia, España, Suiza y el Reino Unido. Los siguientes países lo editarán en los próximos meses: Brasil, Brecia, Corea, Malasia, Sudáfrica, México y Chile.

ALBUM EN DIRECTO/CONCIERTO EN VIDEO

Como os podéis imaginar hay horas y horas de material de audio y video para mirar. Mark y Guy están trabajando con el ingeniero Check Ainlay en el estudio de Mark escuchando todo el material para ver que es lo que va a entrar. También tenemos un editor de video trabajando con todo el material aquí en nuestras oficinas. Ambos lugares están llenos de maquinaria y cintas y no tengo ni idea si saldrá algo de todo este caos, pero estoy segura de que si.
La fecha de edición sería 26 de Abril (mi cumpleaños) tanto para el video como el album. Lo mejor de “las bandas sonoras” de Mark saldrá a finales de año.

CONCIERTO DE BASEL –TELEVISADO EN UK

Nos han confirmado que televisarán el concierto de Basel en TV del Reino Unido. Se va a retransmitir por el Channel 4 -10:20pm. En Nochebuena. (ya os imagino a todos volviendo del pub e intentando encontrar una cinta en blanco para poder grabarlo e intentar hacer funcionar el video!!!!)
Por supuesto, con dos conciertos siendo televisados casi a la vez, ya he perdido el control de en que países están siendo retransmitidos. Abajo os he puesto una lista de países que nos han “comprado” el concierto –así que si vuestro país aparece en la lista, pero no habéis visto nada en la tele todavía, se emitirá pronto (bueno, no me puedo imaginar que ninguna cadena de TV compra un programa y no lo retransmita!!).

CHRIS WHITE –“SHADOWDANCE”

Sé que este album ya se puede conseguir en la mayoría de los países, pero a raíz de las cartas que estoy recibiendo, algunos fans están teniendo dificultades a la hora de encontrarlo. Para solventar el problema, he conseguido unos cuantos cientos de copias de otros países y podréis hacer el pedido para recibirlo por correo.

DIA DE DIRE STRAITS –ITALIA

Los fans italianos han cogido el día 11 de Febrero de 1993 como el día de Dire Straits en “Bounty” –creo que es una discoteca en un barco en Via Weber 6, Rimini (pero comprobarlo con los organizadores –no sea que confundí lo que ponía en el fax)

ENTRADAS USADAS

Tenemos una demanda muy alta de entradas usadas. También tengo una lista de gente que ha preguntado por otros tickets de otros sitios en el resto del mundo, con lo que si tenéis alguno de más de cualquier concierto que no fuese en el Reino Unido, por favor, mandármelo para que así lo pueda distribuir entre entre los demás miembros del DSIS. A partir de ahora, si estáis buscando entradas, por favor, enviarme una tarjeta para que lo ponga en la sección “Buy/sell/exchange.

RECORTES DE PERIODICO

He conseguido recopilar una selección de recientes recortes de periódicos en el Reino Unido –aproximadamente 85 páginas. Más adelante os he puesto un formulario por si queréis una copia del set. Cuesta 5 libras para Inglaterra y 10 libras para el resto del mundo. (lo siento, pero al pesar el paquete y me sale demasiado caro). Además tenemos 7 libretos de recortes que vamos a poner en venta para beneficencia, ya que es un bonito artículo de coleccionista.

MARK/ERIC CLAPTON

En esta época del año siempre viene esta pregunta: “Va Mark a tocar con Eric el día de Año Nuevo en el Royal Albert Hall?” tal y como aquellos que llevan en esta lista mucho tiempo ya saben, simplemente nunca puedo acertar con esta respuesta. Si digo que si, Mark decidirá de momento no hacerlo, y si digo que no, decide tocar en el último minuto. Así que tomarlo como un definitivo “no lo sé”

FOTOS GRATIS

Muchos de vosotros habéis escrito después de que se diesen las fotos gratis en nuestra carta de Marzo –con lo que hemos decidido hacer lo mismo de nuevo. Más o menos la mitad de vosotros encontrareis una foto gratis en vuestra carta –lo hice al azar) como antes, hay fotos nuevas y fotos antiguas –algunas del principio, algunas de los NHB, algunas de la gira actual, algunas fuera del escenario, fotos de estudio, de publicidad, y algunas fotos firmadas de los miembros actuales y pasados del grupo. Algunas fotos son buenas, otras no son tan buenas, algunas espantosas, algunas un poco raídas, algunas que ya habréis visto antes y otras que no…

Todo lo que me queda ahora es desearos una feliz Navidad y próspero Año Nuevo de todos nosotros. Gracias por un buen año. La próxima carta será en Marzo, lo cual me dará tiempo suficiente para recuperarme de la cena de Navidad con la banda/oficina y abrirme paso entre las pujas para ver quien ha conseguido que!

Dear everyone,

It´s now more than a month since the end of the tour, an it still seems very strange here –somehow when the band are touring there´s a certain urgency about every day, and without that it is quiet hard to be motivated. Hard though it may be to believe, I actually miss being too busy to think straight. Not that there´s a shortage of things to do –when you have a hundred or so people plus a couple of dozen articulated trucks full of stuff arriving back in the UK, there´s an awful lot of sorting out to do. Once the equipment had gone back to the various hire companies, and the musical instruments to the various band members, things were a bit clearer, but then there were all the stage clothes to sort through, plus hundreds of assorted objects that people has acquired along the way –some the had bought, some were presents from friends and fans, some things nobody could even remember where they came from!

THE FINAL PART OF THE TOUR

The Italian shows went virtually without a hitch, which I think surprised everyone because of the mayhem we had experienced there on previous visits. We had a great promoter this time, and the only slight “drama” was at the Salerno show where there was a mega-thunderstorm. Lightning hit the stage just before the band came on, and all except nine (of 96) channels on the front desk were blown out. The band eventually went on an hour late and made the best of it with the remaining channels, although there was no keyboard channel for most of the show. However, damage equipment we can deal with-we are just eternally thankful that the lightning didn´t strike a bit later when they were all on stage… I went to Rome, which won the prize for the loudest audience of the tour. Most of us even managed to fit in some sightseeing there- after all, you can hardly to go Rome and not visit the Vatican and the Coliseum, can you?!
We decided to have a giant end-of-tour-party in Barcelona, because although it wasn´t actually the final city, it was much easier for people to get to than Zaragoza. Originally it was just going to be for band, crew and office, but it kind of snowballed, and we ended up inviting every promoter who had worked on the tour, plus assorted family, friends, publishers, record company bods, etc. I seemed to spend the entire two weeks prior to Barcelona booking flights and hotel rooms for the ever-growing numbers attending. The party was in the venue (The Palau St. Jordi), started at about 1am. And large quantities of paella and drink were consumed! Highlight of the evening was when a group of Spanish Chefs arrived with a massive “end of tour” cake which was a real work of art. On the top was a model of the stage, complete with lighting rig and equipment, and marzipan models of the band members. All round the edge of the cake were miniature replicas of the band´s album covers made of icing, pictures in marzipan and icing of all the crew etc. and a list of every concert on the “On Every Street” tour done in icing. I managed to get a couple of the marzipan album covers and the marzipan picture of me, and was intending to let DSIS members have them, but in the end, I gave them out to fans who had been waiting outside The Meridien Hotel, since I don´t think they would have survived the journey back to the UK intact.
I didn´t attend the Madrid shows (took a couple of days off, hired a car, and drove to peaceful Andorra to recover from the party!), but I made my way down to Zaragoza for the last gig. Torrential rain, hail, thunder and lightning, we had it all that evening in Zaragoza –I think the audience deserved a collective medal for endurance. Luckily it had stopped raining by the time DS took to the stage, and it was a wonderful show, spiced up by a few jokes which the crew played on the band, as is usual for a final gig… It was, of course also rather a sad occasion; the pre-show dinner in catering was exceptionally quiet, whereas it is usually a madhouse, and as I wandered (or rather waded) round the stadium during the show, I really felt quite miserable.

SOUVENIR PASSES

During the last section of the tour, I managed to collect up quite a few more spare and used backstage passes for various shows. As you will see when you read on, we are having a charity sale, so if you want one, there are up for grabs…

WHAT IS EVERYBODY DOING, AND WHAT ARE FUTURE PLANS?

This is the question I am being asked constantly at present so here´s a quick run-down:

Mark and Guy –in the studio. John –nothing in particular, but at time of typing he is looking for his golf clubs which he has lost! Chris-rebuilding his home studio and writing material for second solo album. He is over the moon today because he has just passed his motorbike test (After a five day course) and is now planning to get a motorbike –anyone thinking of venturing onto the streets in South London should beware! Phil Palmer –has been working in Italy as session player for an artist named Eros Ramazzotti (no, I´d never heard of him either but apparently he is very big in Italy). He is coming back to the UK next month, and is intending to record an album with Steve Ferrone, Tony Levin, Paul Carrack and Rupert Hine. Paul Franklin –working on the forthcoming Dolly Parton album, plus is intending to design and build his own house in Tennessee. Dunny Cummings –house-hunting in London. Alan Clark –nothing in particular, spending time with wife Sandra and twins Holly and Josh. Chris Whitten –doesn´t want to do another tour for quiet a while, wants to spend time with his new wife Jordan.

The second part of the question is impossible for me to answer right now. Everyone is still getting used to being “back” and nobody can really think further ahead than a few days yet. I don´t think I will have any idea what is in the pipeline until the spring the earliest.

DIRE STRAITS –THE VIDEO

Here´s a run down on the worldwide situation:

If you live in any of the following countries, you should by now have managed to get a copy, since it has already been released: Australia, Austria, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Holland, Italy, Israel, Japan, Norway, New Zealand, Portugal, Sweden, Spain, Switzerland and the UK. The following countries are releasing it very within the next couple of months: Brazil, Greece, Korea, Malaysia, South Africa, Mexico and Chile.

LIVE ALBUM /CONCERT VIDEO

As you can imagine, there are hours and hours of audio recordings and concert footage to go through. Mark and Guy are working with engineer Chuck Ainlay full-time in Mark´s studio, going through all the audio stuff, deciding what is going to be on the album, and we have a video editor working on all the video footage here at our offices. Both places are full of machines and tapes and how anything resembling order will ever come out of the chaos I have no idea, but I´m assured it will. Tentative release date for both the live album and the live video is April 26th (my birthday). The “Best of” Mark´s soundtracks will be out later next year.

BASEL CONCERT –SCREENING IN UK/GENERAL UPDATE

We´ve got a confirmed slot for the screening of the Basel concert on UK TV. It´s now being transmitted on Channel 4 –10:20pm, Christmas Eve. (I can just picture you all staggering back from the pubs, and fumbling around trying to find blank tapes and get the video to work!!!)
Of course, with two live concert films doing the rounds, I have almost completely lost track of the plot as to which country hs transmitted what. You will find below a list of the countries where we have managed to SELL the footage –so if your country appears on the list, but you have not seen anything on the TV, it will be on shortly (well, I can´t imagine any TV station would buy a programme and not show it!!!)

CHRIS WHITE –“SHADOWDANCE”

I know that this album is available in many countries, but judging by the letters I´ve been receiving, some fans are still finding it really hard to buy, even on import, especially in the UK. Anyway, to solve the problems, Chris and I have managed to get hold of a couple of hundred copies from various other countries, and later in this newsletter you will find an order form if you´d like one by mail order.

DIRE STRAITS DAY –ITALY

Italian fans are holding a Dire Straits day on February 11th 1993 at “Bounty” –which I think is a disco on a boat at Via Weber 6, Rimini (but check with the organisers –I might have misunderstood the fax!)

USED CONCERT TICKETS

We had a huge demand in response to our offer of used UK concert tickets (August Newsletter). I also have a list of people who have asked for various other tickets from shows around the world, so if you have ANY spares for ANY non-UK show, please send them in so I can distribute them to other DSIS members. From now on, if you are LOOKING for tickets, please send in an ad. For the Buy/sell/Exchange” column.

PRESS CUTTINGS

I have managed to collate a selection of recent UK press-cuttings –approximately 85 pages. You will see that further on in this newsletter there´s an order form if you want a copy of the set –it´s 5 pounds per set for UK fans, 10 pounds for overseas fans (sorry, but I just weighed them, and the potage for outside the UK is horrendous!). In addition, we have seven booklets of cuttings which we are putting into the charity sale since they make nice collector´s items.

MARK/ERIC CLAPTON

At this time of year, I always get asked “is Mark doing the Eric Clapton shows in the New Year at the Albert Hall?” as those of you who have been on our mailing list for a long time will know, I just can´t win when I answer that question. If I say yes, Mark suddenly decides not to, and if I say no, he decides to play at the last minute. So, take it as a definitely “I don´t know”!

FREE PHOTOS

Loads of you wrote in after we did the “free photos” in the March Newsletter –so we´ve decided to do the same again. About half of you will find a free pic in this newsletter (I´ve put them in various envelopes at random). As before, there are photos past and present –some early shots, some Hillbillies ones, and some from the current tour, as well as offstage shots, studio shots, publicity shots, and various signed photos of current or pat band members. Some are good, some not to so good, some really quite dreadful! Some a bit tatty, some you will have seen before, some you won´t…

All that remains is for me to wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from all of us. Thanks for a good year. Next newsletter in March, which should give me enough time to recover from the band/office Christmas dinner, and to plough through the bids to work out who has got what!
