Hola a todo el mundo,
Tal y como todos vosotros en el Reino Unido sabréis ahora mismo, el disco
recopilatorio “Money for Nothing” entró en las listas la semana pasada
como número 1!! (Y todavía sigue allí esta semana). Ha tenido el mayor
pedido antes de que saliese a la venta en toda la historia en el Reino
Unido –casi un millón –y ahora está en triple platino! No tengo las ventas
en otros países todavía, pero espero que vaya bien en todos los sitios. Sé
que en Australia, el album tuvo suficientes pedidos para otorgarle el
doble-platino antes de que saliese a la venta!
Como podréis ver, el album fue dedicado a Meter Gragea, el ingeniero de
sonido que trabajó con nosotros desde el principio y que murió
trágicamente al atropellarle un coche en Octubre de 1986.
Tengo que admitir que no he puesto el album mucho, principalmente porque
estoy constantemente escuchando el disco de Randy Newman “Land of Dreams”,
el cual ya ha salido en todas las ciudades. Como sabéis, Mark produjo
siete de las canciones y él y Guy también tocan en el album. Es un album
increíble –intentarlo y conseguirlo!
Mark y Alan han terminado sus fechas en USA con la banda de Eric Clapton y
espero que los que conseguisteis ir, lo pasarais bien. Ahora están en
Japón, donde van a hacer conciertos en Nagoya, Tokio y Osaka. De todos
modos, el emperador Hirohito de Japón está muy enfermo y a punto de morir
–y aparentemente si muere, todo Japón estaría de luto durante una semana o
dos, lo que significa nada de entretenimiento ni nada parecido será
permitido. Con lo que, en tal caso, los conciertos se cancelarán y Eric +
banda tendrán que volver a casa otra vez… Alan vuelve al Reino Unido
después de los conciertos en Japón, y Mark volará a New York para estar
con Lourdes, Benji y Joseph –los gemelos van a cumplir un añito. Ya pueden
decir su primera palabra (dadda!!). un poquito antes de que Lourdes se los
llevase a New York, nos visitaron en las oficinas, y estuvieron gateando
por todos los sitios, con lo que no es necesario decir que prácticamente
no hicimos nada esa mañana. Benji tiene una guitarra de juguete, se pasó
la mitad de la mañana agitándola y gritando “dadda” (obviamente un
guitarrista para el futuro…). La otra mitad de la mañana la pasó
subiéndose encima de mi y dándome besitos –ahora es conocido como el
niño-juguete de Liz…
Aparte de los bebés, John y su novia Tracey son ya los orgullosos padres
de una niñita –Jessica –nacida el 21 de Septiembre. La trajeron a la
oficina el otro día pero creo que no la impresionamos ya que estuvo
dormida todo el tiempo… Las gemelas de Jack también están bien, y la
familia está de momento de vacaciones y no volverán a Santa Barbara hasta
la semana que viene –esto significa que todavía no tengo el cuestionario
de Jack para ponerlo aquí. Muchos de vosotros escribisteis y pedisteis que
yo también rellenase ese cuestionario, e incluso mandasteis preguntas para
que yo contestase, con lo que pondré el mío en la siguiente carta.
Muchos de vosotros que habéis pedido un set de fotos y/o camisetas de
Nelson Mandela, las habréis recibido ya, o estaréis a punto de hacerlo.
Siento el retraso, pero el servicio de Correos hizo huelga en el Reino
Unido con lo que no recibí vuestros pedidos durante largo tiempo y el día
cuando terminó la huelga, tuve que irme! Esto es que cuando volví me
encontré con una bolsa gigante de cartas –necesité cuatro días sólo para
abrir los sobres! La competición del dibujo también va tarde debido a
esto, pero eventualmente hice el dibujo hace unas semanas, y los ganadores
del premio tienen que haber recibido sus premios ya. Las respuestas eran:
a/ batería –Jaime Oldaker, b/ bajo –Carl Radle, c/ teclado –Dick Sims.
OTRAS NOTICIAS
Mark estará una o dos semanas en casa, en New York después de que termine
en Japón, y empezará entonces con otra banda sonora de una película
llamada “Last Exit to Brooklyn” (basada en un libro con el mismo nombre de
Hubert Selby Jr. publicado por Paladin Books). Tenemos el libro en la
oficina, pero no hemos tenido tiempo para leerlo todavía, con lo que no os
puedo decir de que se trata! Esta banda sonora se grabará probablemente en
el Reino Unido y Mark la terminará más o menos a finales de Febrero. La
película y el album de la banda sonora deberían salir a la venta en Otoño
de 1989. Guy también estará trabajando en este proyecto, aunque de momento
está trabajando con Brendan Crocker, haciendo música para algunas series
de TV. Las series que están hechas por Granada TV, va sobre la expedición
británica del año pasado para escalar la parte norte del Everest, y se
televisará en el Reino Unido en seis partes, la primera saldrá el 15 de
Noviembre. La serie se llama “On the Big Hill”. Esperamos que se televisen
en otros países después, pero no tengo la confirmación todavía. Acabo de
hablar con Guy y me dice que si es posible, él y Brendan intentarán coger
la música de las series y la grabarán en un album, también llamado “On the
big Hill” y lo sacarán a la venta en un mes. Dice que lo grabarán en su
habitación! Si esto ocurre, os haré saber como podéis haceros con este
disco en mi próxima carta…
Terry acaba de volver de New York donde ha estado trabajando en un album
de Dion que va a publicar Arista Records. El album de Dave Edmunds donde
se supone que tenía que haber trabajado ha sido pospuesto. A cambio, Terry
y Dave, acompañarán a Pay Charles, Jerry Lee Lewis, Fats Domino, Bo
Diddley y algunos más para una extravaganza rock´n´roll en Italia. Después
de algunos días de ensayos, harán un programa de televisión el cual es
probable que se televise en Europa, y será grabado sobre el 17 de
Noviembre en Roma (Terry no fue muy claro al respecto). No sé si se
emitirá en directo os si se televisará más tarde, tendréis que controlar
en las programaciones de televisión. Por cierto, Terry aprovó su carnet de
conducir hace unas semanas (más vale tarde que nunca!). Ya ha estrellado
el coche de su mujer, pero nada serio y dice que ahora está más seguro y
está pensando atreverse con la autopista M4 para venir a visitarnos a la
ofician (socorro!!). Para aquellos de vosotros que preguntasteis, no
–nunca conseguí mi coche, con lo que tendré que comprarme otro con el
dinero del seguro.
Guy, al cual le están gustando las carreras casi tanto como a Mark,
compitió en el Superprix Cellnet en Brands Hatch hace tres semanas,
conduciendo un Ford Escora XR3i. Llegó el segundo (empezando con el puesto
12) y podría haber ganado la carrera, exceptuando que los pilotos célebres
tenían que hacer 5 vueltas y Guy por error, hizo 6 vueltas! Su compañero
fue David Hunt (hermano del piloto James Hunt).
Chris, que tocó con Chris de Burgh en su album “Flying Colours” durante el
verano, ha estado haciendo un par de programas televisados con él durante
las semanas pasadas (algunos de los fans del Reino Unido puede que lo
hayas visto en el programa“Live at the Palladium” el pasado Domingo). En
Diciembre, Chris estará ensayando sus propias canciones con su propia
banda con siete miembros (la cual todavía no tiene nombre –sugerencias son
bienvenidas!), y en Enero, se irá a Japón para dar unos seis conciertos
con el guitarrista Hugo Burns (ex -Wham!) –así que fans japoneses,
intentar conseguir ir a alguno de estos conciertos.
ULTIMAS NOTICIAS
Parece ser que Randy Newman hará unas cuantas apariciones en televisión
para promocionar su album “Land of Dreams”. Está planeado que esté en el
programa de “Wogan” en el Reino Unido (el cual se ve en varios paises
europeos) el 21 de Noviembre, y Mark, Guy y Brendan estarán en su banda
para este programa. También es posible, y esto depende de si el single
“It´s Money that Matters” entra en las listas en el Reino Unido o no, que
salgan en “Top of the Pops” esa misma semana! Con lo que, si queréis verlo
en el programa, ya sabéis lo que tenéis que hacer –ir a comprar el single
de Randy Newman!! El 24 y 25 de Noviembre ya tienen un programa holandés
en la televisión, que quizás se grabe en Londres, o quizás en Hilversum.
Este programa, esperemos que se televise en Europa y es posible que sea un
especial de media hora que luego será vendido para otras televisiones y
televisado en otros países… no lo sé todavía. Aparte de eso, no hay más
noticias de momento. Como podréis deducir de todo lo dicho anteriormente,
no hay fechas relacionadas con Dire Straits a la vista…

Dear everyone,
As all those of you in the UK will know by now, the "Money For Nothing"
hits album entered the charts here last week at No. 1! (and it's still
there this week). It had the biggest pre-release orders ever in this
country - nearly a million - and has now gone triple platinum! I don't yet
have sales figures for other countries, but hopefully it's doing well
everywhere. I do know that in Australia, the album had sufficient pre-release
orders to give it double-platinum status before it was even out!
As you will see from the sleeve, the band dedicated the album to Peter
Granger, the sound engineer who worked with us from the very beginning
until he was tragically killed by a hit-and-run driver in October 1986.
I must admit I haven't been playing the album very much, mainly because I
am constantly listening to the Randy Newman album "Land of Dreams", which
is now out in all countries. As you know, Mark produced seven tracks on
this and he and Guy are also playing on it. It's a really great album - do
try and get it!
Mark and Alan have finished their USA dates with Eric Clapton's band and I
hope those of you who attended shows had a good time. They are now in
Japan, where they are doing shows in Nagoya, Tokyo and Osaka. However, as
you may have heard, Emperor Hirohito of Japan is seriously ill and
possibly close to death - and apparently if he dies, the whole of Japan
goes into mourning for a week or two, which means no entertainment of any
sort is allowed there, so in that case the shows would be cancelled and
Eric + band would have to come home again... Alan returns to the UK after
the Japanese dates, and Mark will be going to New York to be with Lourdes,
Benji and Joseph - the twins are just coming up to their first birthday.
They can now say their first word (dadda!). A short while before Lourdes
took them to New York, they visited us here in the office, and were
crawling all over the place, so needless to say, not much work got done
that morning. Benji has a toy guitar, and he spent half the morning waving
it about and shrieking "dadda" at the top of his voice (obviously a guitar
player of the future...) The other half of the morning he spent climbing
all over me and giving me kisses - he is now known as "Liz's toy-boy"...
Whilst on the subject of babies, John and his girlfriend Tracey are now
the proud parents of a little girl - Jessica - born on September 21st.
They brought her to the office the other day, but she obviously wasn't
impressed, she stayed asleep the whole time... Jack's twin girls are also
doing well, and the family are currently on vacation and don't get back to
Santa Barbara [t]ill next week - this means I STILL don't have Jack's
questionnaire to put in here. A lot of you wrote and said I should also
fill in a questionnaire, and sent questions in for me to answer, so I'll
put mine in this newsletter.
Most of you who ordered photo-sets and/or Nelson Mandela t-shirts should
by now have received them, or will be getting them very shortly. Sorry for
the delay, but the postal strike in the UK meant that I didn't get any
orders in for ages, and the day the strike finished, I went away! That
meant when I returned there was a huge, huge backlog of mail - it took me
four days just to open the envelopes! The competition draw date was also
delayed because of this, but we eventually did the draw a couple of weeks
ago, and the prizewinners should have received their prizes by now. The
answers were: a) drums - Jamie Oldaker, b) bass - Carl Radle, c) keyboards
- Dick Sims.
other news
Mark will be spending a week or two at home in New York after he finishes
in Japan, and is then starting on another soundtrack album for a film
called "Last Exit To Brooklyn" (based on the book of the same name by

office, but I haven't had time to read it yet, so I can't tell you what
it's about! This soundtrack will probably be recorded in the UK, and
Mark's due to finish it at the end of February. The film and the
soundtrack album are scheduled for release in the Autumn of 1989. Guy will
also be working on this project, although at the moment he is working with
Brendan Croker, doing some music for a TV series. The series, which is
being made by Granada Television, is about last year's British expedition
to climb the north face of Everest, and will be shown on the ITV network
in the UK in six parts, the first of which will go out on November15th.
The series is called "On The Big Hill". Hopefully, it may be shown in
other countries later, but I have no confirmation yet. I just spoke to Guy,
and he tells me that if at all possible, he and Brendan will try and get
the music for the series recorded as an album, probably also to be called
"On the Big Hill", and released within a month. He says they will record
it in his bedroom! If this happens, I will let you know how you can get
hold of the record in the next newsletter...
Terry has just returned from New York where he was working on the Dion
album, to be released on Arista Records. The Dave Edmunds album he was to
have been working on after that has now been postponed. Instead, Terry and
Dave are joining up with Pay Charles, Jerry Lee Lewis, Fats Domino, Bo
Diddley + a number of others, for a rock 'n' roll extravaganza in Italy.
After a few days of rehearsals, they are doing a big TV show which is
likely to be shown throughout Europe, and it is being recorded on or about
November 17th in Rome (Terry was a bit vague about this). I don't know if
it is going out live, or whether it will be shown at a later date, you'll
have to check in your newspaper's TV pages. Incidentally, Terry passed his
driving test a few weeks back (better late than never!). He has already
crashed his wife's car, but not seriously, and he says he is more
confident now, and is even thinking of attempting the M4 motorway and
coming to visit us in the office (help!). By the way, to those of you who
asked, no - I never got my car back, so I have had to get another one with
the insurance money.
Guy, who is getting nearly as keen as Mark on car-racing, competed in the
Cellnet pro-celebrity superprix race at Brands Hatch three weeks ago,
driving a Ford Escort XR3i. He came 2nd (from starting 12th on the grid)
and would probably have won the race, except that the celebrity drivers
were supposed to do 5 laps before handing over [to] the pro driver, and
Guy went and did 6 laps by mistake!! His pro partner was David Hunt (brother
of racing driver James Hunt).
Chris, who played on Chris de Burgh's "Flying Colours" album during the
summer, has been doing a couple of UK TV dates with him over the past
couple of weeks (some UK fans may have spotted him on the "Live At The
Palladium" show last Sunday). In December, Chris will be rehearsing his
own songs with his own seven-piece band (who haven't yet got a name -
suggestions welcome!), and in January, he is off to Japan to do about six
concerts with guitarist Hugh Burns (ex-Wham!) - so Japanese fans - try and
get to one of the shows.

It looks very much like Randy Newman will be doing a few TV appearances to
promote the "Land Of Dreams" album. He is scheduled to do the "Wogan" show
in the UK (which is also seen in several European countries) on November
21st, and Mark, Guy and Brendan will be in his band for the show. It is
also possible, and this depends on whether or not the single "It's Money
That Matters" charts in the UK, that they will be doing "Top Of The Pops"
that week! So - if you want to see them on the show, you know what to do -
go and buy stacks of Randy Newman singles!!! November 24th and 25th are
currently being held for them to do a Dutch television show, maybe
recorded in London, maybe in Hilversum. This will hopefully be shown
throughout Europe and may well be a half-hour "Special" which would then
be sold to other TV networks and shown worldwide... don't know yet! Apart
from that, no other news at the moment. As you can probably tell from
reading all of the above, there aren't any DS dates lined up in the
for[e]seeable future...
