Hola!

Espero que hayáis tenido un buen verano.
Bien, estamos empezando a tener mucho trabajo por aquí otra vez. Estoy segura que estaréis contentos de escuchar que la razón de ello es porque el grupo está a punto de empezar a estar activo otra vez. 1984 ha sido en comparación bastante tranquilo sin que pasase mucho relativo al “grupo”, aunque por supuesto, todo el mundo ha estado implicado en diferentes proyectos (las bandas sonoras de Mark, el LP en solitario de John, la gira de Hal y Alan con Tina Turner y las sesiones de Terry). Pero ahora, todo eso ya está hecho, es hora de pensar otra vez en los discos de Dire Straits y las giras.

Este otoño, la banda empezará de nuevo a ensayar para un nuevo LP de estudio. Mark ha escrito por lo menos 10 canciones hasta ahora – aunque no os puedo decir como son hasta que las haya escuchado en los ensayos. El LP será grabado probablemente durante Diciembre y Enero (quizás en Montserrat) y espero que salga a finales de Marzo con un single un poquito antes (es difícil ser más clara en estos momentos).

Entonces vendrá la gira. Todo esto es muy tentador de momento, pero parece que el grupo va a realizar la gira más larga hecha hasta ahora por ellos entre Abril y Diciembre 85. Hemos estado muy ocupados chequeando los locales etc. Y de momento parece ser que vamos a visitar los siguientes paises: Israel, Yugoslavia, Hungría, Austria, Alemania, Bélgica, Holanda, Dinamarca, Noruega, Suecia, Finlandia, Francia, España, Suiza, Luxemburgo, el Reino Unido, Canadá, Japón, Australia y Nueva Zelanda. Por supuesto, os haré saber todos los detalles cuando esté decidido, pero por favor, no empezar a llamarme aún para preguntar sobre ciudades, locales o tickets. Recordar, nada de esto es definitivo todavía y puede cambiar (aquellos que lleváis en esta lista bastante tiempo sabéis que cambiamos muchas cosas todo el tiempo!) Tan pronto como pueda, os iré informando más.

Parece ser que la banda será la siguiente: Mark, John, Hal, Alan y Terry (por supuesto), además Mel Collins en el saxo, Guy Fletcher como teclado adicional y dos músicos más.

Debido a esto, parece ser que la oficina será increíblemente caótica durante los siguientes 18 meses. Todavía somos solamente tres personas en la oficina –Ed (manager), Paul (tour manager) y yo (secretaria de prensa/promoción), así que quizás no seré capaz de contestar vuestras cartas individuales tan a menudo. Algunos de vosotros escribís todas las semanas haciendo diferentes preguntas y me gustaría pediros que mandaseis las menos cartas posibles. Si vivís en el Reino Unido, por favor sería mejor llamar si podéis (01 723 5640). Tendremos una secretaria temporal que empieza la semana que viene, así que lo haré lo mejor que pueda!

Ahora una pequeña nota de lo que está pasando ahora mismo. Mark está en Nashville tocando con Chet Atkins. No sé si es para un futuro LP o simplemente por diversión, pero os lo haré saber. Hal está en New Cork viendo Twiggy, que es una buena amiga de él. La está ayudando con algunas canciones. Alan ha vuelto de vacaciones y ahora se está relajando antes de la embestida (los ensayos comienzan el 1 de Octubre). John ha pasado el verano haciendo algunas cosas para promocionar su LP –nosotros visitamos algunos paises europeos para entrevistas las cuales puede que hayáis visto en prensa o escuchado en la radio. Terry hizo algunos conciertos con Paul Brady y se acaba de cambiar de casa. Por lo demás, todos están esperando para empezar a trabajar otra vez

Hope you've all had a good summer.
Well, it's getting very busy here again. I'm sure you will be pleased to hear that the reason for this is because the group are about to launch into activity once more. 1984 has been comparatively quiet with nothing happening on the 'group' side of things, although of course everyone has been involved with different projects (Mark's soundtracks, John's solo LP, Hal and Alan's tour with Tina Turner and Terry's session work). But now all that is done, it's time to think about Dire Straits records and tours again.
This autumn, the band start rehearsals for a new studio LP. Mark has written at least 10 songs so far - I can't tell you what they are like till I've heard them rehearsing though. The LP will probably be recorded during December and January (maybe in Montserrat) and we hope to get it released by the end of March, with a single just before (it's hard to be definite at this stage though).
Then comes touring. This is all very tentative at the moment, but it looks like the group will be undertaking the biggest world tour they have ever done between April and December 1985. We have been busy here checking out halls etc., and at present it looks like we'll be visiting the following countries: Israel, Yugoslavia, Hungary, Austria, Germany, Belgium, Holland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, France, Spain, Switzerland, Luxembourg, the UK, USA, Canada, Japan, Australia and New Zealand. Naturally I will let you know details as they are set, but please don't start ringing me up about specific cities and venues or tickets yet. Remember, none of this is finalised, and it might all change (those of you who have been on the mailing list for a long time will know that we do change things quite a lot!). As soon as I can I will let you know more.
It looks as if the line up of musicians for the touring will be Mark, John, Hal, Alan and Terry (of course), plus Mel Collins on sax, Guy Fletcher on additional keyboards, and two other brass players.
One effect of all this will be that the office is going to be incredibly chaotic for about the next 18 months. There are still only three of us here - Ed (manager), Paul (tour manager) and me (press/promotion/secretary), so I may not be able to answer your individual letters so often. Some of you write every week asking different questions, and could I ask you to keep these letters to a minimum. If you live in the UK, please phone instead if you can (01 723 5640). We have a temp. secretary starting next week, so I'll do my best!
Now just a quick note on what is happening right now: Mark is in Nashville playing guitar with Chet Atkins. I don't know whether it is for a future LP or just for fun, but I'll let you know. Hal is in New York seeing Twiggy, who is a very good friend. He's helping her record some songs. Alan is back from holiday and is now relaxing before the onslaught (rehearsals actually start 1st October). John has spent the summer doing bits of promotion for his LP - he and I visited a few European countries for interviews which you may have seen in the press or heard on the radio. Terry did some shows with Paul Brady, and has just been moving house. Otherwise, everyone is just waiting to start work...
