Hola a todos,
Cómo todos habréis notado, esta carta llega tarde! El verano ha sido con
mucho trabajo aquí y la cantidad de cartas de fans llegando aquí es
increíble, así que el gurpo y yo hemos estado trabajando para cambiar la
forma en que el Servicio de Información funciona. Como sabéis, hasta ahora
lo estaba haciendo en mi tiempo libre, pero eso ya no es posible y me
estoy apretando para mantener a los nuevos fans que quieren apuntarse a la
lista. Hemos decidido que a partir de ahora haré parte del trabajo durante
las horas de oficina (aunque no estoy muy segura como voy a poder hacerlo
con el resto de las cosas que tengo que hacer a lo largo del día), y
esperemos que el servicio mejore y obtengamos resultados más eficientes.
Las cartas vendrán más regularmente, mejores y con más ofertas para
vosotros para que tengáis ventaja. Necesitaremos más organización para
conseguirlo, así que me gustaría pediros que reduzcáis las preguntas a las
mínimas durante los próximos meses, por favor!
Desgraciadamente, una vez que el nuevo sistema esté operativo, tendréis
que pagar una pequeña cantidad de dinero para pertenecer a la lista. Ya os
iré poniendo detalles sobre esto en la próxima carta (en Diciembre) y
llegado ese punto, tendréis la opción de seguir en la lista, pagando esta
pequeña suscripción o dejarla. No hemos decidido todavía cuál será el
cargo, pero intentaremos mantenerlo lo más barato posible –básicamente
será sólo para cubrir gastos de papel, sobres, envíos y administración..).
De momento, Mark y John financian este servicio, y creedme, los costes
suben a miles de libras!
Ahora, a por las noticias: estoy segura de que ya habréis visto en la
televisión, que el Prince’s Trust 10th Fiesta de cumpleaños fue un éxito.
Mark y John tocaron en el concierto en el “super grupo”, junto a Tina
Turner, Phil Collins, Eric Clapton, Paul Young, Midge Ure, Elton John, Rod
Stewart, Sting, George Michael, Joan Armatrading, Status Quo, Paul
McCartney, Howard Jones y Mark King (espero que no me haya olvidado de
nadie). Mick Jagger y David Bowie también vinieron e hicieron Dancing in
the Street, aunque ese trocito no salió en la televisión. Aquellos que
estuvisteis en el concierto veríais a la Princesa Diana bailando, y
llevando un tonto sombrero, y obviamente divirtiéndose de lo lindo. El
príncipe Charles estaba, por supuesto, más reservado, pero creo que al
final se soltó un poco… tengo que decir que la audiencia fue una de las
mejores vistas en Wembley Arena –no pararon ni un segundo y la atmósfera
fue genial. Después fuimos todos a la fiesta en el hotel Wembley
International con Charles y Diana, y hablaron con todo el mundo –una
ocasión muy amistosa. Me perdí buena parte del show ya que estaba muy
ocupada corriendo de un sitio a otro organizando los coches, las bebidas,
etc.. así que lo volví a ver la semana siguiente en la tele.
Desde ese concierto, Mark ha estado trabajando en los estudios de Londres
en diferentes proyectos, el principal ha sido con el nuevo LP de Tina
Turner. Ha producido dos canciones para ella, una de ellas escrita por él
Overnight Sensation, y otra escrita por Paul Brady (también dirigido por
esta oficina) llamada Paradise is Here. El album se llama Break Every Rule
y sale esta semana (Capitol Records). He oído las dos canciones que Mark
ha producido y son realmente excelentes.
Mientras en el estudio, Mark también escribió y grabó una pieza corta de
música para la película de Martin Scorsese´s (The Color of Money). En caso
de que no conozcáis a Martin Scorsese, sus anteriores películas incluyen
Taxi Driver, King of Comedy y alter Dark. Mark también compuso y grabó dos
piezas cortas para un documental de la ITN sobre el Príncipe Charles y la
princesa Diana, el cual se televisará en la ITV en dos partes el 21 y 22
de Septiembre (sujeto a cambios) y el cuál saldrá en muchos paises del
mundo después.
Como podéis ver, ha estado muy ocupado –de hecho llegó un punto en que
estaba trabajando unas 14 horas al día. Estoy feliz de decir que está
ahora mismo tomándose un descanso (en New York y LA) durante un mes o así.
El estuvo en la oficina bastante el mes pasado así que le pasé todas sus
tarjetas de cumpleaños y sus regalos. Se quedó muy sorprendido por haber
recibido tantas tarjetas! Muchas gracias a aquellos que las mandasteis, y
gracias por las tarjetas para los otros miembros del grupo por sus
cumpleaños.
Antes de que Mark se fuese a los Estados Unidos, estuvo intentando
escribir una pieza de música para el equipo británico en la Carrera de
yates de la Copa Americana para utilizarla como su canción.
Desgraciadamente no tuvo tiempo de hacerlo y a cambio están utilizando el
tema de Going Home (del LP Local Hero). Este será sacado como un single en
Octubre (la fecha exacta falta por decidir) para que coincida con las
vueltas preliminares de la carrera. Probablemente, ya la habéis oído
bastante últimamente, ya que la BBC la está utilizando para cubrir los
juegos de la Commonwealth y los Campeonatos Europeos Atléticos.
El resto de los chicos han estado tomándose las cosas con calma. John se
ha visto involucrado en un proyecto llamado “Life Education Scheme” el
cual es para ayudar la prevención del consumo de drogas entre los jóvenes.
El proyecto es una iniciativa del príncipe Carlos y estoy segura de que
oiréis sobre esto antes o después –esperan que se haga mucha publicidad.
John también espera grabar otro LP en solitario este año. Guy tocó en el
nuevo LP con Tina Turner y está descansando ahora. Chris y Jack estuvieron
trabajando en algunas canciones en New York y Alan ha estado trabajando en
material en solitario en casa para un posible futuro proyecto, y
probablemente trabajará en el LP en solitario de Mick Jagger para finales
de año. Este fin de semana, John jugará al cricket en un partido benéfico
en Bristol para Amnistía Internacional. El capitán del equipo de Amnistía
es Viv Richards y han hecho un equipo de Virgin Records (Capitán Ian
Bothman). Chris, Guy y yo tenemos entradas para ver a Prince en Wembley
próximamente, y el pobre de Alan estaba desesperado por ir –hubiese volado
de Newcastle sólo para ir, pero no pudo conseguir vuelo! Mark estaba en un
vuelo a New York en esos momentos con lo que también se lo tuvo que
perder. El concierto estuvo bien, pero la fiesta de después fue realmente
algo especial –Prince tocó otras canciones para unas cien personas –tocó
todas sus caras B del principio además de canciones de los Stones, etc.

Ahora las respuestas a algunas de vuestras preguntas:
Cuándo sale el próximo LP/próxima gira? No hasta dentro de mucho tiempo,
me temo. La gente sigue llamando o escribiendo diciendo que ha oído
rumores de varios conciertos, pero por favor, estar seguros que no hay
conciertos planeados en ningún sitio del mundo hasta que la banda haya
sacado otro LP, y eso no pasará hasta por lo menos finales de 1987. Si la
situación cambia, vosotros seréis los primeros en saberlo, pero es muy muy
improbable. Quieren un completo descanso, y eso significa un descanso de
conciertos, de televisión, de radio y medios.
Por favor, da una lista de todos los LPs y singles que se hayan editado.
Intentaré cotejar toda esta información e incluirla en la próxima carta.
También intentaré incluir una lista de todos los artistas con quienes han
colaborado los miembros de Dire Straits en el pasado.

Va a hacer el grupo un calendario de 1987? No íbamos a hacer ninguno ya
que el grupo pensó que eso es algo que hacen los grupos como Duran/Wham!,
pero nos han presionado bastante y finalmente vamos a hacer uno. Se podrá
comprar en tiendas pequeñas en todo el Reino Unido desde el 21 de
Septiembre más o menos, y el precio recomendado será 2,99 pounds. Pero ya
hay algunos calendarios “bootleg” por ahí!!
De donde proviene el nombre de Knopfler? Hungría
Habrá otro libro sobre Dire Straits? Todavía no. Estamos jugando con la
idea, y os haré saber si se desarrolla.
Repetirá The Tube el concierto de Wembley o el de Israel en la televisión?
Dijeron que no tenían intenciones de repetirlo, pero quizás si todos
vosotros escribís y les molestáis un poquito lo harían… así que rascaros
el bolsillo y escribir a The Tube, Tyne Tees TV City Road, Newcastle upon
Tyne, N1 2AL…
Y eso es todo de momento. Por fin me voy de vacaciones a Menorca y no
volveré hasta Octubre, así que por favor, intentar no escribir durante un
tiempo. Por supuesto, podéis mandar vuestro pedido de fotos (ver la página
siguiente) de tal forma que pueda organizarlos cuando vuelva de las
vacaciones.

Dear everyone,
As I'm sure you will have noticed, this newsletter is late! The summer has
been very busy here, and the amount of fanmail arriving here is
unbelievable, so the group and I have been working out a way of changing
the way the Information Service is run. As you know, I currently do it in
my spare time, but that is just not possible any more, and I'm having a
real struggle just to keep up with new fans joining the list. We have
decided that I will do some of the work during office hours from now on (although
quite how I'm going to fit it all into the day with all the other things I
do, I'm not quite sure yet!!), and hopefully, the service will improve and
become more efficient as a result. Newsletters will be more regular,
better, and with more offers for you to take advantage of. It will take
quite a bit of organisation to get it underway, so could I ask you to keep
your letters with questions to a minimum for the next couple of months,
please!
Unfortunately, once the new system is in operation, we will have to make a
small charge to members of the Information Service. I will be putting
details of this in the next newsletter (due December) and at that point,
you will have the option of staying on the list and paying the small
subscription fee, or coming off the list. We haven't decided what to
charge yet, but we will try and keep it as cheap as possible - basically
it will just cover paper, envelopes, postage and administration etc.). At
present, Mark and John finance the service themselves, and believe me, the
costs run into thousands of pounds!
Now, on to the news: As I'm sure you will have seen on TV, the Prince's
Trust 10th Birthday Party was a great success. Mark and John both played
at the show in the 'supergroup', along with Tina Turner, Phil Collins,
Eric Clapton, Paul Young, Midge Ure, Elton John, Rod Stewart, Sting,
George Michael, Joan Armatrading, Status Quo, Paul McCartney, Howard Jones
and Mark King (hope I haven't missed someone out). Mick Jagger and David
Bowie also came on and did Dancing In The Street, although that bit wasn't
shown on TV. Those of you who actually attended the concert will have seen
Princess Di dancing about, wearing a silly hat, and obviously really
enjoying herself. Prince Charles was, of course, more reserved but I think
he got into it in the end... I must say the audience was one of the best
ever seen at Wembley Arena - on their feet from the word go, and the
atmosphere was great. Afterwards we all went to a party at the Wembley
International Hotel with Charles and Di, and they chatted to everyone - a
very friendly occasion. I missed quite a bit of the show as I was busy
running about organising cars, drinks, etc., so I watched it on TV the
following week.
Since that concert, Mark has been working flat out in the studios in
London on several different projects, the main one being Tina Turner's new
LP. He produced two tracks for her, one of which he had written himself
called Overnight Sensation, and another written by Paul Brady (also
managed by this office) called Paradise Is Here. The album is called Break
Every Rule and is out this week (Capitol Records). I've heard the two
tracks Mark produced and they're really excellent.
While in the studio, Mark also wrote and recorded a short piece of music

know who Martin Scorsese is, his previous films include Taxi Driver, King
Of Comedy and After Dark. Mark also wrote and recorded two short pieces
for an ITN documentary on Prince Charles and Princess Diana, which is due
to be screened on the ITV network in two parts on September 21st and 22nd
(subject to change) and which will also be shown in most overseas
countries at a later date.
So... you can see he has been busy - in fact at one point he was working
about 14 hours a day. Now, I'm glad to say he is taking a break (in New
York and LA) for a month or so. He was in the office quite a bit last
month and so I passed on all his birthday cards and presents. He was
really chuffed to get so many cards! Thanks to all of you who sent them,
and thanks for the cards for the other band members on their birthdays.
Before Mark left for the States, he was intending to write and record a
piece of music for the British team in the Americas Cup Yacht Race to use
as their theme tune. Unfortunately he never had time, so instead they are
using Going Home (from the Local Hero LP). This will be re-released as a
single in October (exact date to be decided) to coincide with the
preliminary rounds of the race. You have probably been hearing it quite a
lot recently anyway, as the BBC have been using it during their coverage
of the Commonwealth Games and European Athletics Championships.
The rest of the guys have been taking things fairly easy. John has become
involved in a project called the Life Education Scheme, which is aimed to
help prevent drug abuse amongst young people. The scheme is the personal
initiative of Prince Charles, and I'm sure you will get to hear about it
sooner or later - they are hoping for a lot of publicity (it's in early
stages right now). John also hopes to record a solo LP later this year.
Guy played on the Tina Turner LP and is now taking a break. Chris and Jack
were working on some songs in New York, and Alan has been working on solo
stuff at home for a possible future project, and he will also probably be
working on Mick Jagger's solo LP at the end of the year. This weekend,
John is playing cricket in a charity match in Bristol for Amnesty
International. The captain of the Amnesty team is Viv Richards and they
are playing a team from Virgin Records (captain Ian Botham). Chris, Guy
and myself all got tickets to see Prince at Wembley recently, and poor
Alan was desperate to go - he would have flown down from Newcastle
specially but couldn't get a flight! Mark was on a plane to New York at
the time so also had to miss it. The gig was all right, but the party
afterwards was really something special - Prince played another set to
about a hundred people - playing all his early B-sides plus old Stones
stuff etc. Eric Clapton joined him on guitar...
Now to answer some of your questions:
When's the next LP/tour? Not for a long time, I'm afraid. People keep
writing in or phoning to say they've heard rumours of various gigs, but
please be assured that there are no concerts planned anywhere in the world
until after the band have done another studio LP, and that probably won't
be until at least the end of 1987. If the situation changes, you will be
the first people to know, but it is very, very unlikely. They want a
complete rest, and that means a rest from shows, TV, radio, and press.
Please give a list of all LPs and singles ever released. I will try and
collate this information and include it in the next newsletter. I will
also try and include a list of other artists the various members of Dire
Straits have worked with in the past.
Where can I get lyric books/sheet music? By mail order from Music Sales,
78 Newman Street, London W1. Tel: (01) 636 7777, or from the major record
stores like HMV or Virgin.
Will the group be doing a 1987 calendar? We weren't going to do one, as
the group felt it was something only Duran/Wham! type groups did, but
we've given into to pressure and we're doing one. It will be available
from retail stores throughout the UK from about September 21st, and the
recommended retail price will be 2.99 pounds. There are also some bootleg
calendars around!!!
What country does the name 'Knopfler' come from? Hungary.
Will there be another Dire Straits book? Not yet. We are toying with the
idea, and I'll let you know if there are any developments.
Will the Tube repeat either the Wembley concert or the Israeli footage of
the group on TV? They say they have no plans to repeat either, but maybe
if you all wrote and hassled them, they would... so, get your pens out and
write to The Tube, Tyne Tees TV, City Road, Newcastle upon Tyne, N1 2AL...
