Hola a todo el mundo,
Si, hemos vuelto!! Parece ser que va a pasar mucho el año que viene, con
lo que empezamos de nuevo el Information Service otra vez, y recibiréis
las cartas cada 3 meses. Por supuesto, tendréis que pagar la suscripción
antes, y al final de esta carta tendréis una página diciéndoos como tenéis
que hacerlo, y con el formulario de la suscripción que deberéis enviar con
vuestro pago. Esta carta es gratis, con lo que vuestro pago cubrirá las
siguientes cuatro cartas. Debería deciros ya que toda la información que
os vaya a contar durante las siguientes cuatro cartas, tendrá que ver
principalmente con Mark. Está a punto de terminar de grabar y mezclar su
album en solitario a finales de este año y entonces hará algo de promoción
durante los tres primeros meses del año que viene. El album deberá salir
sobre el 1 de Marzo, probablemente precedido por un single. Abril será el
mes de los ensayos y tenemos fechas para conciertos reservadas desde Mayo
hasta Octubre de 1995.
ALBUM EN SOLITARIO/GIRA
Ahora mismo sólo he oído trocitos de algunas de las canciones que Mark nos
tóco en una grabadora portátil bastante cutre, y que eran sin ninguna
guitarra principal y sin voces con lo que, obviamente es un poco difícil
determinar los resultados! Algunas de ellas sonaban como los primeros
Straits, habían algunas un poco más roqueras y algunas con influencias
irlandesas y de Nashville. Como he estado de vacaciones, no sé muy bien
como van saliendo, pero espero tener la oportunidad de escuchar algo más y
os comentaré más cosas en la siguiente carta. Ahora estamos grabando un
especial para la televisión que coincide con la salida del album, porque
las compañías de televisión necesitan mucho tiempo para reservar un
espacio y no teníamos ningún hueco con todo el lío de grabar, mezclar,
promoción etc que Mark está haciendo.
De momento, la banda que irá de gira no tiene nombre todavía. De hecho,
todavía no tenemos nombres confirmados de quien formará la banda, pero
todo esto vendrá, obviamente, en los siguientes meses. No intentaremos que
sea una producción masiva con millones de luces y esas cosas, será mucho
más básico. Simplemente dos tablas sobre botes de cerveza para el
escenario y un par de bombillas de 60 watios (sólo bromeaba)…
PROPUESTA DE TOUR
De momento, hemos reservado fechas en el Reino Unido/Irlanda, Europa, USA
y Canadá. Tenemos ya los locales reservados en casi todos los sitios pero
no os puedo decir ahora mismo cuales son. Tendréis que tener paciencia
hasta que todo esté confirmado. Obviamente, no he llegado tan lejos
todavía como para saber de entradas, precios, etc.. pero todos esos
detalles vendrán en las futuras cartas…
ARTICULOS
Recibo muchas cartas de gente que quiere camisetas, etc.. y no tenemos
nada de eso aquí de momento. Esto es solo para haceros saber que tendremos
artículos para que coincida con la gira de Mark pero estos no se podrán
conseguir hasta el año que viene. Queremos intentar que el diseño de las
camisetas se ajusten a la carátula del album etc. la cual no está hecha
todavía! Venderemos cosas en los conciertos, y también se podrá pedir por
correo. Quizás hagamos cosas sólo para los miembros del DSIS también.
GUARDIA REAL DRAGOON SCOTS
Mark si que estuvo en The Usher Hall en Mayo y tocó con la guardia Real
Dragoon Scots de gaitas y banda militar tal y como mencioné en mi carta
anterior (espero que los que fuisteis a verlo disfrutaseis). De cualquier
modo, en lo que se refiere a sacar un single, no hemos oído nada al
respecto, con lo que sólo nos queda asumir que la idea ha sido descartada…
GUY FLETCHER/CHRIS WHITE/DANNY CUMMINGS
Un resumen de lo que están haciendo Guy, Chris y Danny: Guy estaba
ensayando con Roger Daltrey para su siguiente gira, pero la gira se ha ido
retrasando y retrasando y retrasando que finalmente coincidió con los
ensayos que Guy iba a hacer con Bryan Ferry. Con lo que se tuvo que
decidir por uno y finalmente fue por Bryan Ferry con lo que estará en la
gira de Bryan. Así que ir y saludarlo! Según lo que dice Guy, hay
conciertos en el Reino Unido, Europa, Australia y Japón pero no sabía
cuando ni donde! Chris White ha tenido un año muy malo. Está mucho mejor
ahora después de su accidente de moto (ha sido un largo y lento proceso) y
está intentando que le indemnicen (ya que, si no hubiese sido por el
accidente, hubiese estado en la gira de Pink Floyd). El conductor del
coche no estaba asegurado, tiene además varias sanciones y ahora hay una
orden de arresto porque no apareció en el juicio. Danny se casó hace unas
semanas con su novia de toda la vida Séller, y ha estado participando un
poquito en el album de Mark. No he sabido nada de nadie más desde que
volví de mis vacaciones.
CALENDARIOS
Una vez más la compañía de calendarios Cultura Shok tiene un calendario de
Dire Straits para este año. El calendario de 1995 se podrá comprar por
correo desde esta oficina, aunque, no olvidar que esto son productos no
oficiales (no han sido aprobado por nosotros con lo que no sé como serán
las fotos) GANADORES
COMPETICIÓN DE DIBUJOS
El dibujo ganador de la última competición del
Invierno - Por Doug Forrest - aparece a continuación (Espero que haya
llegado bien al copiarlo). Pienso que todos estareis de acuerdo en que es
un dibujo excelente. Más dibujos en las próximas cartas.
TRIVIALIDADES
En cartas anteriores hemos incluido a veces cosas interesantes como
recortes de periódico, o extractos de algunas de las raras y maravillosas
cartas que recibimos aquí, y muchos de vosotros habéis escrito preguntando
por más de lo mismo. Si veis lago relacionado con MK o Dire Straits que
pueda ir bien en esta categoría, hacérmelo llegar! Mientras tanto, esta es
una carta que recibimos hace tiempo. Obviamente, escrita con el espíritu
de “bien, si no pides, no te dan”:
“I am your former buddy. Send me at least a five dollar in notes
immediately. My address is…..”
“soy tu amigo de antes. Envíame por lo menos cinco dolares en billetes
enseguida. Mi dirección es…..”
Y otra más que recapitula las impresiones de esta persona de los NHB´s…
“Cuándo vendrá MK a Holanda con los Nothing Hillbillies? Esperamos que
puedes responder a esta carta y estamos en espera…”
Si me escribís sobre algo que necesita una respuesta personal, POR FAVOR,
POR FAVOR, POR FAVOR, recordar poner vuestro nombre completo y la
dirección en vuestra carta. Me pasa muy a menudo que las cartas vienen
firmada con un nombre sin apellido y sólo un sello para darme una pista,
así que muchas veces no tengo ni idea de quien son! Además muchos de
vosotros me habéis preguntado por nombres y direcciones de otros fans
(presumiblemente para penpals). Sólo para que lo sepáis, nunca doy esta
información. Si queréis un amigo para cartearos, tenéis que poner vuestro
nombre en la sección correspondiente y esperar a que otros fans se pongan
en contacto con vosotros. No es justo para los fans que no quieren recibir
cartas que de sus datos a otras personas.
Muchos de vosotros preguntasteis como lo estaba haciendo con mis dos
trabajos. Bien nada más empezar a hacer el otro trabajo también, Mark
decidió que iba a hacer una gira después de que su album saliese a la
venta. Con lo que empezó a haber mucho trabajo aquí y tuve que dejar mi
otro trabajo y vuelvo a estar aquí cuatro días a la semana (de lunes a
jueves). Imaginaros que dentro de poco habrá mucho más trabajo que
terminaré trabajando cinco días a la semana (obviamente destinada a estar
aquí hasta el día en que muera!). Y como respuesta a los que
preguntasteis, si, mis vacaciones fueron geniales –empecé en Detroit, fui
por toda la zona de los Grandes Lagos, luego a Toronto y las Cataratas del
Niagara. El tiempo fue horrible, pero conseguí ir a un par de buenos
conciertos (Elton John/Billi Joel, The Stones y Aretha Franklin).
Oh, si, muchas gracias de parte de MK a todo el mundo que le envió
felicitaciones y regalos por su cumpleaños.

Dear everyone,
Yes, we're back! Looks like quite a lot is happening in the next year, so
we are re-starting the Information Service again, and you will be
receiving quarterly newsletters. Of course, you will have to pay some
subscription moneys first, and at the back of this newsletter you will
find a page telling you how to pay, and a subscription form which you
should send in with your payment. This current newsletter is free, so your
payment will cover the next four letters. I should tell you now that most
of the news I'll be sending out over the next 12 months will be related to
Mark. He is due to finish recording and mixing his solo album at the end
of this year, and will then do some press and promotion during the first
three months of next year. The album is due out on (or about) March 1st,
probably preceded by a single, April has been set aside for tour
rehearsals, and we have tour dates booked for May to October of 1995.
SOLO ALBUM/TOUR
At this stage I've only heard roughs of some of the songs, which Mark
played to us on a rather crappy portable cassette player, and which were
without any lead guitar and without any vocals, so obviously it was a bit
difficult to determine the end result! Some of it sounded a little like
early Straits-type stuff, there were a couple of fairly heavy rock tracks.
and some Irish and Nashville influenced songs. Since I've been on holiday,
I haven't heard how it's coming along, but hopefully I'll get a chance to
hear some more and I'll give you the low-down in the next newsletter. We
are not now filming a TV Special to coincide with the album's release,
because the TV companies need incredibly long lead-times in order to 'book
a slot' and we just couldn't fit it in along with the recording, mixing,
promotion, etc. that Mark is doing.
As yet, the touring band doesn't have a name. In fact, it doesn't even
have any confirmed band members so far, but all this will obviously come
together within the next couple of months. We are not intending for this
to be a massive production with millions of lights and so on, it will be
far more 'basic'. Just two planks resting on beer crates for the stage and
a couple of 60 watt lightbulbs (only joking)...
PROPOSED TOUR
At present, we have dates booked in the UK/Eire, Europe, the USA and
Canada. We do have venues on hold in most places, but I can't tell you at
this stage where they are, you will have to be patient until everything is
confirmed. Obviously I haven't yet got as far as tickets/prices etc., but
all those details will be in future newsletters, (...).
MERCHANDISE
I get lots of letters from people wanting t-shirts etc., and we don't have
anything here at all at the moment. This is just to let you know that we
WILL be doing merchandise to coincide with Mark's tour, but this won't be
available till next year. We want to try and tie the designs in with the
album artwork etc., which we haven't done yet! We'll be selling stuff at
the gigs, and it will also be available via mail order. We may well be
doing items exclusively available to DSIS members too.
ROYAL SCOTS DRAGOON GUARDS
Mark did indeed go to The Usher Hall in May, and performed with the
Dragoon Guards' pipes and military band as mentioned in the last
newsletter (hope those of you who went enjoyed it). However, as far as the
release of a single is concerned, we haven't heard anything from them, so
we can only assume that the idea has been shelved...
GUY FLETCHER/CHRIS WHITE/DANNY CUMMINGS
Briefly, here's a round up on what Guy, Chris and Danny are doing: Guy was
rehearsing with Roger Daltrey for his forthcoming tour, but the tour got
put back and put back and put back, and eventually coincided with the
rehearsals that Guy was going to do with Bryan Ferry. He has therefore
decided to undertake the Bryan Ferry rehearsals instead and will be on
Bryan's forthcoming tour, so go along and wave at him! According to Guy,
there are dates in the UK, Europe, Australia and Japan, but he didn't know
when they were! Chris White has had a really bad year. He's nearly better
now after his motorbike accident (it's been a very long and slow process),
and is currently in the process of trying to get compensation (as he may
well have gone on the Pink Floyd tour had he not been injured). The driver
of the car was uninsured, had already got several convictions, and now has
a warrant out for his arrest since he never turned up at court. Danny got
married a few weeks ago to his long-time girlfriend Shelley, and has been
doing 'a few bits and pieces' on Mark's album. Haven't heard from any of
the others since I got back from my hols.
CALENDARS
Once again, the Culture Shock calendar company have a Dire Straits
calendar in their annual range. The 1995 calendar will be available from
this office via mail order, although don't forget, these are unofficial
products (i.e. they have not been first approved by us so I don't know
what the pictures are like).
TRIVIA
In previous newsletters we have sometimes included amusing newspaper
cuttings, or extracts from some of the weird and wonderful letters we
receive here, and lots of you have written in asking for more of the same.
If you see anything related to MK or DS which fits this category, send it
in! In the meantime, here's a letter we received a short while ago.
Obviously written in the spirit of 'well, if you don't ask, you don't get...'!
...and another which obviously sums up this person's impression of the
NHB's...
If you write to me about something which need a personal response, PLEASE,
PLEASE, PLEASE remember to put your full name and address on your letter.
I often get letters just signed with a first name and with only a postmark
to go on to give me a clue, so I often can't work out who they're from!
Incidentally, several of you have written in asking if I can supply you
with names and addresses of other fans (presumably for penpal purposes).
Just so you know, I never supply this information. If you want a penpal,
you must advertise in the 'Penpals' section and wait for other fans to
contact you. It is not fair to fans who don't want to receive letters if I
give their details out to others.
Lots of you asked how I was getting on doing my two jobs. Well, no sooner
had I started the second job, Mark decided he WAS going to tour after the
release of his album. It therefore suddenly got a lot busier here, so I
have now given up the other job, and I'm back to four days a week here (Monday
to Thursday). imagine it will soon get so busy that I will end up here
five days a week again (obviously destined to be here till the day I die!).
And in response to those who asked, yes, I had a great holiday - started
in Detroit, went all round the Great Lakes area. then to Toronto and the
Niagara Falls. Weather was dreadful, but I did manage to see some good
shows (Elton John/Billy Joel, The Stones, and Aretha Franklin).
Oh yes, and a big thanks from MK to everyone who sent birthday cards and
presents.
